September event registration is now open --> https://www.nasaproracing.com/admin/event/909

We will be back to PIR to finish off our season and the early pre-registration discounts will be back in effect. Currently registration rates are at an all time low. At the end of this month, fees go up to the "normal" rates and the week before the event, rates go up! :-o

The schedule currently will allow for separate groups in all four HPDE groups (as long as the numbers can justify it).

We will also have Trial by Fire Drifting on Sunday at PIR which always makes for some great spectating. There are two registration options for drift. A single day option for Sunday drifting only $100, or a 2 day option which includes HPDE2-4 on Saturday and Drift on Sunday for only $175. What a steal!

It will be a regular 2 day Time Trial weekend with contingency and points on the line. With many local hot shoes at Nationals, this could be your chance to gain an edge at 100 points both days!

A relaxed schedule means there's also room for not one "UMS Tuning Time Attack" but TWO! There will be a Time Attack on Saturday as well as Sunday. This could really shake up the season points, so if you're in the lead OR if you're within striking distance of the overall champion, you don't want to miss either day!

Race group is a test and tune only. Registration prices (only $269!) as well as track time (four 20 min sessions) reflect that. Don't miss your chance to get an edge on your competition and get back in the groove before them to finish off the season strong.

You know you're dying to return to PIR again, so what are you waiting for?

Gates open Friday September 11, 2009 at 4pm.

Garages are first come first served.

Register early to secure your spot on track.

Update from Bryan @ Toyo's Only.

Ok guys, I will have a guy there at the track. However if your tires are not pre ordered there wont be any there!!! With me out of town I will have any and all extra tires with me. So if you think you are in need get your orders in and pre paid for no later than the 4th of Sept!!!!

UMS the sponsor could always make the season champion prize a Blind Apex display (i.e. in car lap timer) if the winner already has a transponder. They are a little cheaper than the actual transponder too. There's nothing better than being able to see your actual official AMB lap times real time!

Hi Nick! I don't think we've met but I'm glad to hear you'll be at the events going forward. It's the most fun you can have in your car without doing something legal and still have all your clothes on. I'll be at the NASA Nationals for the Sept event but my wife and several other very trusted folks will be running the show and will make sure your experience is top notch.

P.S. I think you know Josh from TTM? He's one of my major sponsors/supporters.

I'm lucky to have him as a good friend and so close by. He's been at my house working on it with me every night after work for the past week. We've made major discoveries and improvements, but this is kinda stumping us.

it's an intermittent power issue. I actually got it to turn on and run twice, but as soon as it got to roughly operating temperature, complete loss of power and engine shuts off. From there it has no power, and seems like it won't regain power unless it cools off...

It has this issue even with the main relay unplugged, leaving me to believe it has nothng to do with the actual relay. The relay wiring perhaps, but not the relay itself. Tried other relays as well. I've had experience with the main relay issue on my CRX.

I'm having a heat-related electrical issue and it's NOT the main relay.

When the car is hot, whether while driving or parked after driving for awhile, the car will fail to run/start. I've swapped to a new relay and it still happens. I've swapped a known good relay while it's happening and it still won't start/run. I'm thinking it's my ignition switch. I have a known good one with about 80,000 less miles and 6 less years on it than my current (original) one.

This is something I have been looking to get into for some time now. About how much does it cost to get started and a day or two on the track?

fmx_dbc
09-11-2009, 08:16 AM
Starting out for your first day on track, I'd says it's roughly $160-$200. TopRamn can give you a more accurate quote since he helps run these events. Making your car "track worthy" can add up quickly too though. Just need to make sure your car won't be leaking fluids and is mechanically sound. I will suggest changing your brake fluid to high temp "racing" fluid. Like Gabe says below this not a necessity but let's face it, you're paying a decent amount of money to get your track experience and with stock brake fluid there is a chance that your sessions could be cut short because your brake fluid is boiling and you've lost braking power. It's just a small step to ensure you get the most out of your experience.

This is something I have been looking to get into for some time now. About how much does it cost to get started and a day or two on the track?

$40 for a NASA membership (good for one year) and about $159-$179 for one day on track (usually 3 x 20 minute sessions). Your first day will include 2 classroom sessions going over the basics of high performance driving and one on one, in car instruction for all of your sessions that you're on track.
If you register for a 2nd day (as a part of a weekend-long event), its only an additional $100 for the second day.

The high temp brake fluid is nice, but not a necessity. All you need is a car that runs, with no leaks and decent amount of tread left on the tires and brakes pads. I see alot of guys on here that are hesitent to come out cause they're waiting to put that one last mod on their car. The reality is that a totally stock Honda is more than capable for your first day on track. You'll be way faster after a day of instruction on track that you would have been with those new springs you are waiting on, or that new engine mod that is going to add another 10-20 hp.

....not too mention that its waaay easier to instruct somone, and way easier for the student to learn in a car that is stock or only mildly modified. You can concentrate on your technique and the car will be much more forgiving when you make a mistake.

This is something I have been looking to get into for some time now. About how much does it cost to get started and a day or two on the track?

40 dollar yearly membership, good for one year from date purchased, also gets you grassroots magazine subscription

de1 is typically 169 for a single day or 269 for 2 days. this is where you start. (3 30 minute sessions or 4 20 minute sessions)

after that, usually about 159 for single days and 269 for 2 days. (4 20 minute sessions)

It's just a small step to ensure you get the most out of your experience.

for this, i am gonna say to not follow craigs footsteps for a track worthy car. bring any car. make sure your car doesnt have leaks, has working seatbelts for driver and passenger, and has some decent tires and you are ready to go, brake fluid is good but specialty stuff isnt required. the idea is to make sure its something you want to do before dumping ass loads of money into prepping for something you have never done. im sure you will be hooked but its better to make sure.

That statement is confusing. :)
Don't feel too bad about missing Sunday. The track was about a half second slower vs. Saturday. :pissed:

My car + TTB =

You are probably taking points for mods that don't contribute a whole lot to lowering your lap times.
IIRC you have one of those CF duckbills. Those do very little to help aero at PIR, so why take points for it?
The oem front lip that you have is another one. Why take the 3 points for something that doesn't do a whole lot. If you are going to take the 3 points then run an aggressive front lip that is really going to block off the ability for air to flow under the car.
Are you classing the car using the preapproved motor swap base class in the rule book or have you had the car base classed by sending your weight and dynojet sheet to Greg?

I'm bummed about missing Sunday cause it was paid for lol...the tires were new to me and very slippery (especially when not properly pressured)...and the car isnt set up to run TT. Like you said Im taking points for a lot of stuff. The car has a base class of TTC/PTC by Greg. Luckily Mervin took care of all that hassle so I didn't have to. I really look forward to driving in cooler weather again. I need to get back on some RA-1's and get the feel for those. I guess they are now the spec tire again for Honda Challenge:drunk: Regardless, I have lots of work to do on and off the track

If you're making 164 whp, how in the hell are you base classed in C?
You should have no problem getting a TTD (no stars) base classing with that power output so long as your car is in the 2400-2450 competition weight range.

What else are you taking points for?

fmx_dbc
09-14-2009, 07:48 PM
I stand corrected. after looking at the email from Greg to Mervin and my TT classing forms it has a base class of PTD/TTD, minimum comp weight of 2300#. You're questioning made me look over my paperwork again and it does appear to be TTC, not TTB. Robert is going to be like WTF if I have him change it again lol. I'm not concerned about the points so I may just leave it be. Good lookin out Gabe! :you rock:

PhoenixR

yet i'm base classed as PTC.

164whp. 2315 lbs.

technically, if you go by the points system, both mine and craig's cars are well into the PTB territory. i've been bugging people to try to spec all H2 cars into one PT class, but i haven't made much progress yet. 3 legal H2 cars can (and do) run 3 different PT classes.

jeff, scott -- PTB
tony, jason -- PTC
craig, dan -- PTD

i believe eric woods is in PTD due to the fact that his car is an integra and technically not "swapped". all six cars have proven to be close to the ssme speed. it's a big part of the reason why all of the hondas have dropped out of race group. it's an easy enough problem to resolve and, in retrospect, we're all supposed to be running H2 anyway.

Really? Is that after you sent the dynojet into Greenbaum w/ your comp weight for an engine swap reclass.

If I class my car soley by the rule book (using the preapproved base class for a B18c5 engine in my EG chassis - and not by sending my dynojet sheet and comp weight into Greg for a reclass) my car is deep into B also.

2 different sets of rules for 2 different series. IMHO: its really tough to find the optimal mix of mods to be 'fast' in both series'.

agreed -- that's why i'm concentrating on H2. the issue comes back to the whole "not enough cars" problem that currently exists. as it is, i'm stuck in a car that's simply not competitive (yet?) in PTC. with more honda challenge cars, this will not be an issue. the 944s aren't competitive in PTD but there are enough of them to run their own class -- i would like to see honda challenge go the same route.

my car was classed by paul bloomberg for race group.

Tony has the right idea here. Like I said, I dont have the car set up to try to be competetive in TT. My goal with it is H2. Now what can we do to get these Hondas into the same class?

PhoenixR
09-15-2009, 12:47 PM
if we can fill out the honda challenge field, getting the cars into the same PT class won't matter. we're not competitive in PTB or PTC, yet we're too fast to run in PTD. the PT classing works well for many people -- just not hondas, especially not mine.

What list? You mean the list / rulebook for Honda Challenge?
Right now I would use this as your list for sucess to making it to race group:

1.) finish up whatever you're doing on your car so that it can safely be operated on a public roadway so that you can make it to the track. That means forget waiting on your next paycheck to get that suspension piece you're waiting on, or those wheels you're waiting on, or whatever mods you have planned. Save your money and just bring something, anything, to the track so you can start logging seat time. Cheap, stock parts (that goes for wheels, suspension, seats, engine parts, etc.) actually work pretty well for beginners. Go figure.

2.) Once you get a day or two under your belt. Then start to upgrade anything that you may have skipped over in your initial build just to hit the track like racing brake pads, high temp brake fluid, decent street tires.

3.) When you've got a few track days under your belt (5 or 6) and you're thinking about moving up to DE3 then IMO, thats when you get the HC rulebook out and start planning your build with what your budget will allow. You may realize at that point that you may just want to do HPDE in the car once in awhile to stretch its legs out, you may want to do TT and go all out fast times without the wheel to wheel action of racing, or you may decide that HC is in fact the ticket for you.

Cliffsnotes: don't worry about building your car (and dumping ALOT) of money into somethng that you may not end up liking that much. Start out slow and cheap and build your way up.

2)Im going with star specs for my tires.( i can get a good deal with my wholesale discount). racing pads, roll bar & stiffer suspension are on my next years list of mods.

3) Once i get it out there and see how it does.. we will see where i wanna go with it.

but thank you for your advice gabe.

I think many will agree with the following.

1) The problem with having everything you have wanted is that most of the time, none of that is legal for the race group we are discussing, Honda Challenge, and you end up replacing it anyways. Either way, if you bought it already, you got a long ways to go before racing anyways. So enjoy what you have.

2) Star specs is a good start. Skip the cage/bar for now. If you have suspension, enjoy it before replacing it. Throw some new pads and fluid sooner than later. But none of that is required for day 1.

3) Get out there sooner than later. =)

I'd like to see H2 grow as well. I don't think it's impossible but the challenge is your average person running that class or willing to build a car for that class doesn't typically have the funds to actually "race" on a consistent basis. This crap is wicked expensive no matter how you slice it.

Brady, wants to do H2 but doesn't want to race by himself and I don't blame him. However, I will most likely be racing H2 in Boles car at the Oct and Nov events! So Tony, come on out and hopefully I we are close enough that we can actually "race". The one time I drove Jason's car though it was pretty far off the pace though and needs a little work to be competitive with you (i.e. final drive). If you and I are competitive, I bet Brady will jump in and from there it could very well snowball...

BTW, I talked to Chris Rado on the phone last night. He is registered for TT and TA in Oct! :)

Nice tires, but 195 is the only width they make for a 15" wheel. You running 15s?

Tage,

Jason mentioned the fact that you would be driving his car and I'm really looking forward to it! Unfortunately, I will be missing the October event due to a scheduling conflict -- I'm running a desert race in Primm, Nevada the same weekend. I will most certainly be out there in November! I know the ins-and-outs of Jason's car pretty well and I know that thing has some quirks to it -- let me know if you need any help. I think that people might start to get a little more interested in the series if they actually see a couple of Hondas running wheel-to-wheel.

Tony: just curious....as an H2 car, what sort of lap times do you average for a 20 minute race?

My guess is +/- 1:12's.

I would like to do my daily DA for H2 (eventually) but that's 2-3 years from now. :(

with the open diff 3 year old tires, i generally averaged mid 1.12s with the fast race lap usually being around a 1:12 flat. the fastest the car has gone in its current state was a 1.11.7. with better gearing and some fresh(er) tires, i'm hoping to see the car run low 1.11s - high 1.10s.

Yup. The 195 Star Spec is 7.6". The 205 Azenis is only 7.8". The RE-01R, RE-11, Ecsta XS are like 8.0" - 8.2", which is more proper.

Star Spec > Azenis...if you can find them for less than $90 each.
