View Full Version : Post your high ISO shots 1600+

I was bored tonight so thought I'd make a thread for high ISO shots to compare cameras.

I am a Canon user and have been for years but I am pretty impressed with Nikon's latest cameras and their high ISO performance which tempted me to make the switch but I didn't want to have to sell all my gear and buy it all over again (i.e the D700, finally something that can compete with the Canon 5D Mark II). I respect whatever you shoot with and I don't want this thread to turn into an argument (if it does I will delete posts), but I thought it would be interesting to make a thread to compare what ALL cameras can do with high ISO shots whether its good OR bad. This should allow people to make informed decisions when buying a new camera if high ISO performance is one of the factors you are looking for.

I've owned a Canon 300d, 30d, 50d and I recently picked up a Canon 7D (1.6 crop sensor & Canon's latest feature set) and a couple days ago I figured I would order up the Canon 5D Mark II as well since I've always wanted a full frame sensor camera. It will be interesting to compare the 2 since I have been extremely impressed with the 7D's high ISO performance & image quality so far.

I know on an everyday basis you would never really need a reason to shoot ISO 25,600 but since that is the highest setting the 5D II can do I tested it out tonight. I will post more images with different ISO settings on both my cameras when I get a chance.

If you don't know how to keep the EXIF info intact for your images, all you usually have to do is NOT save for web in photoshop but SAVE AS instead. That should keep the EXIF info intact which will show everyone that the ISO claimed for your pic was actually used.

**POSTS W/IMAGES WITHOUT EXIF INFO INTACT TO PROVE THE CORRECT ISO THAT WAS USED WILL BE DELETED.**

I use the exif viewer add on for Firefox which is a free download. It allows you to right click on any image and see the exif info which tells you info such as: camera used, date + time of image, shuttter speed, aperature and ISO setting.

Here is my first shot with my 5D II @ ISO 25,600

off topic but how do you like the 7d compared to 50d...image quality wise? Congrats on getting a 5dmk2, ive been debating it since i can get it brand new for 2k, but i shoot more fast stuff so leaning towards other things instead of wasting my money on it.

my glass sucks dick for high iso.
but seriously my 28 80, if someone needs to hit something really hard, go for it.

and my 70 200 just captures almost to much light lol.

so heres only a 1000

off topic but how do you like the 7d compared to 50d...image quality wise? Congrats on getting a 5dmk2, ive been debating it since i can get it brand new for 2k, but i shoot more fast stuff so leaning towards other things instead of wasting my money on it.

The 7d is far better in every way compared to the 50d. I am very happy with the upgrade. Image quality is better, focusing and metering system blows any other Canon out of the water and of course the high ISO performance is almost on par with the 5D II. The 5d II is definately slower but I will not be using the 5d II for fast stuff, thats where the 7d will shine. The 5d II I mainly got because I always wanted to have a full frame as part of my arsenal and you just can't beat the image quality of a full frame sensor. 21mp is a little overkill but man, the cropping you can do and still get an awesome image is pretty badass IMO.

If you are only shooting fast stuff the 7d is the choice to stay with OR the brand new 1D Mark IV (but thats $4999 body only). You can always use the money that you would use on the 5d II for better glass. I considered that but I already have some good glass to get me by for a long time.

I haven't noticed a huge difference between glass and high iso images with my gear. On my first 3 images I used my 70-200 F4L IS @ F4 and on the last shift knob pic I used my 17-55 F2.8 @ F2.8 so both shots wide open. I just got a 100mm F2 that I need to mess around with.

Very clean bokeh for 1000 though. The D700 continues to impress me. Its cool that Nikon finally stepped their game up with high iso performance. The last few cameras like the D300, D700 and higher are badass.

not bad, more i see the 7d does shine over the 50d past 1600, but below that 50d almost looks a tiny bit better on most of the tests i've been able to dig up. Not enough for me to justify spending another 800 or so after i sell my camera, rather just get a full frame alternative to the 50d, or maybe just go wtih a 1.3 crop like a 1dmk3

I hear ya. The reason I got the 7d was not only due to better high iso performance but it is an entirely new camera from canon. It has a ton of new features which make it worth it to me like the 19 point af system, 63 zone metering, 100% viewfinder with many new features just in the viewfnder itself, built in electronic leveling system, wireless flash triggering built in, dual digic 4 processors allowing 8fps, 1080p video with better options than the 5d ii, etc. I was able to sell my 50d with grip on craigs for $950 in less than 24hrs too. I also always like to have the newest gadgets tho so for me it's not really a need but mostly a want lol.

The more I mess around with the 7d and 5d ii though the more the 7d impresses me with it's image quality. The build quality is a lot better on the cheaper 7d too. Not a lot of people understand that when I post on the potn forums but you have to have both cameras side by side to see what I mean.

you can easily shoot past 200. ISO800 should'n't even be an issue. 1600 MIGHT be pushing it.

ive started processing my noise a little different and 200-400 isn't "that" bad but my pictures really lose focus rather easy. But sooooooonnn ill have a new camera WOO :)

oh man 7D is night and day :) one of the first pic's with my new 7D
7D Canon 17-40 F4L @ F4, 6400 ISO, needless to say ACR cleans up the noise amazingly well, noticeably compared to my XT

pic is crap but eh
