carbon fiber hood help/oxidation

looks like clear coat came off.... idk... its sort off blury in some spots... does it need a new clear coat


whats a good wax or anything to get rid of oxidation and bring the original color back to play

I had this problem on my CF hood.

I just got all three rubbing compounds, started out with the roughest, and then worked up the smoothest, threw on 6 coats of wax and shes looking like new.

Re-clear it, make sure when they spray it to add a little bit of black tint to the clear, then when you go to wax it use a carnauba wax. (Mothers makes a great wax) I waxed mine about once a month and it staid shinny and clear for the whole three years I had it. Just my two cents. GL

wet sand and reshoot the clear. Then make sure you wax it once a month especially if the car sits outside in the summer time.

If you have a good quality hood like vis or something then when it is faded you can just get away with wet sanding it and buffing, if not most likely will have to sand and re-clear..

here is a vis that we did, when we got it you couldnt even tell it a cf hood. just looked like a faded black or something.

What compounds were used, buffer pads, speed.. etc?

to all asking questions about the process to restoring CF... A friend of mine only does carbon work for a living, makes custom stuff. The process differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, as previously stated. Better quality stuff like the VIS have thicker layers of resin on the carbon, so its easier to do. but you have to be careful when doing the wet sanding not to go too deep or you will burn through the resin and damage the carbon. there is a series of different grit papers to go through when wet sanding. and a technique to that as well. after that then a HIGH quality clear coat should be sprayed. knowledge of automotive paint systems and techniques comes into play there. then you get into waxing and polishing, again alot in the technique you just learn over the years. my buddies done more carbon work than most people ever even see in their life, hes taught me alot as well. if anyone has anymore specific questions or needs some help with anything carbonfiber related then PM me and i'll put ya in contact with my friend, hes a good guy and really skilled.

wet sanding and buffing is not a hard process

1. I have a Dewalt multi speed buffer, Its a couple hundred bucks.
2. I switched out the backing of my dewalt with a velcrow backing so the pads you buy just stick on, and no they don't fly off, instead of the plate that has a bolt in the middle you take on and off.

the process is after you have laid your base and clear you might have small amounts of orange peel. You can start with 1000 grit wet sanding paper and move your way up the latter to 1500 to 2000 to 2500 until you see no more orange peel and the surface is as smooth as glass.

Take your buffer I always set mine to about 1450 RPMS.
I start with 3M Perfect it rubbing compound and 3M pad its white and looks like an eggshell box.
Buff the panel in sections until the whole panel is brought back to a very nice shine, be careful when buffing so you don't burn threw the clear.

next move to a swirl remover Meguires or 3M use a black pad for this and buff again until you see no lines or swirls just perfectly smooth paint.

I go a step further with another product but that is my little secret.
