View Full Version : Some Portrait Style Work

Well, I took a break from shooting cars and did some family style photos. most are lit with hard light but I think there is one in there that's no flash. These were done for this family to send out some picture type x-mas cards. I'm open to hear different suggestions from people that know what they are talking about. Any editing done was requested by the family (the b/w background).

only thing I can suggest is in positioning of the individuals. hard to explain cuz I'm kind of hungover, but when i think 'portrait' i think good angle, well lit 'modeled' picture. some of these look almost like a random family snapshot...dunno if that makes sense. the 3rd one is good, only I would have shot it so he's looking up at me a bit more...i seriously feel like i'm not making sense lol back to sleep.

positioning is something i SERIOUSLY need to work on so I completely understand what you mean. i've got to go read about book about it or something. lol #3 is certainly my favorite.

this proves ugly parents make ugly kids 9 times out of 10, color also seems washed out like the white balance was severely off in the first few shots, looks way too cool for a portrait.

I'd suggest getting into some lighting. Backgrounds overexposed in all but the last one... Matter of fact, it looks like they're all over-exposed or maybe it's the wb like statiK suggested.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

I think number three and five are the best shots out of the group, Other than the hard light and positioning I can't say too much bad about these. Only practice and alot of snaps will get your model positioning on point.

My girl had trouble with positioning for the longest time. My suggestion is it's all in the details. ie: hair, necklaces, hand placement, head tilt, shoulder placement.

Good shots nonetheless

Whoa, watch your fucking step! Did I ask how attractive the people in the pictures looked? That doesn't even matter when you're shooting this kind of thing. These people are part of my extended family and that bullshit is uncalled for.

Everyone else, thanks for the comments.

you'll notice that i added my constructive criticism just like i always do, it doesn't matter who's family they are, i do not find them attractive, part of your JOB as a photographer is to make them look as good as they can look, you didn't do that. similar to the thread with the bitches... just keep working, i admire your persistence as i have no patience for people, that's why i don't do portraits.

Ok there Mr. E-thug

Your a good beginning photographer but you got a shitty attitude dude.

Seriously Idgaf if your related to them. If you don't want people to criticize, then don't fucking post pictures. Especially on a public forum

jesus..
picture 3 is probably your best shot out of the whole set but part of his arm is cut off.
I'd watch out for that kind of stuff. Its too easy to cut out some hair or shoes or stupid shit like that.

other than that, they look like normal snap shots, not portrait

i agree, seem slightly cold and the WB seems off

it doesn't help shooting people in all red. red sucks to shoot. it always seems too saturated.

I also like #3, but the cut off arm is distracting
