All right guys this going to be the be the mega thread for any and all 2010 ASR Super Lap items (few exceptions of course) If you have any questions or wanna share stuff post here please.

*2010 Schedule:
March 20th
May 22-23
July 10th (Night Race)
Oct 16th
Nov 20th (Super Lap Final)

*Pricing reamins the same. $50.00 for all day. $35.00 for Super Lap and one practice session.

* Drifting has been dropped from the schedule

*The power/weight classes remain unchanged. Calculated wheel horse power and car weight w/driver will be used to determine class.

New ratios:
Class Sub-A (Power to weight up to 20:1)
Class A (Power to weight 19.99:1 - 15:1)
Class B (Power to weight 14.99:1 – 10.0:1)
Class C (Power to weight 9.99:1 and lower)

New Rules for 2010:

* The tire tread wear rating for class Sub A is now 140 (old was 200)

* We will run a 2 hot lap system for the TA competition. (Just like our last Super Lap Event. The 2 lap system will maximize open track time after the competition)

* We are adding a Rookie class. (For anyone who has never attended a Super Lap event)

* November 20th has been added to the Super Lap schedule. (This will be the 6th and Final event)

* You will be allowed to drop 1 event from the ASR Super Lap Series just not the final event on November 20th.

* The July Super Lap Event will be a night race. ( Gates open at 3 pm the Time Attack will be held around 9 pm)

* Several new awards will be added to our series (most improved, rookie, overall points champ)

AZHT members I need your help. Whats your thoughts on a R-compound penalty?

(We discussed a R compound tire penalty at the meeting and I am not fully set with what we came up with. I want input from you all on what to do.)

Thanks, Tim

sounds fun except you have some dates that conflict with NASA AZ and that could impact the attendance.

As for Rcomps..its TIme attack...your there to win right?

Yeah the date thing sucks...I tried my best to not have any conflicts....

I agree about the R comps, since were still really grassroots here a lot of people are bitchin about the tires. I am trying to get everyones opinion.

My thoughts are there should not be an R-comp penalty....especially if you already have a pseudo street class (aka the sub A class). This is time attack, not time trial, its not meant to be completely equalized. If people are bitching about tires....the most important mod you can add....then they need to reevaluate their priorities for mods.

That May event is looking pretty good....

hmmm.... going to have to check the schedule when I get home. Lots of racing opportunities happening this year :)
I hope to be going March 6th-7th with Pro Auto Sports / SouthWest MotorSport, might have to make another trip out there this year, assuming it's half as fun as everyone says.

Rules look pretty familiar as do the PTW limits... :-)

Here's my input...

For my NASA Time Attack series in 2007 I had a 25WHP penalty rule for R-tires but primarily to keep the main sponsor of the series happy because he felt there was a great demand and the masses were going to be on street tires. The reality was he (and maybe one other person) was/were the only people on street tires from what I recall. Most people who have progressed to Time Attack (that are also remotely competitive) are already on R-tires for several other reasons vs just to be more competitive at various "Time Attack" events.

I think the main complaint you'll hear from folks who want to enforce a "R-tire penalty" is from folks who don't have R-tires because they think that it's cheaper to simply run "what you brung" and/or are too cheap to buy a 2nd set of wheels and higher performing tires. This was also the SCCA autocrossing mentality when they started developing "street tire classes". The concept started off innocent enough but they did not accomplish the initial goal of reducing the cost of the class by providing the "grassroots" racer to be just as competitive as the rich guys, because all that has happened now is the tire makers are producing some sick ass street tires with "treadwear" ratings that meet the 140 TW rating that is needed for SCCA and most other sanctioned bodies. Additionally, just like any other tire out there, a tire is the most competitive when it's fresher and with as few heat cycles as possible (i.e. not a daily driver tire!). So now there's a whole bunch of street tire classes and you still have people trailering their cars to the events and/or having a 2nd set of wheels/tires with freshly shaved street tires (down to 3/32") so they can gain an advantage. If you don't think you can compare an R-tire to some of the new generation street tires that have been shaved, then you haven't driven a set yet then. There's really not much difference from most R-tires. I didn't believe it until I drove a car with some and started seeing some of the results both at our local NASA events and at all the National autocrossing events.

You can do what you want but I think I speak from experience here and I can tell you that all that will happen is the guys that are *for* a R-tire penalty will still get crushed by the guys who want to win (then they will find something else to bitch about that isn't fair). Then the guys that are already running R-tires (which I assume is the majority of your customers) will simply get pissed off because you're going to cost them more money if they want to actually take your series seriously.

I also thought about doing a Rookie class but I couldn't really figure out an easy way to do it w/o ending up with double the classes or developing some wacky handicapping index that no one would bother to take the time to understand. In other words you really need to have a rookie class for each of the 4 classes or are you actually going to put all rookies in the same heads up class regardless if they are driving a Geo Metro (on all season street tires... LOL!) or an Ariel Atom?

There's my $22.02 worth of input!

Oh and in case you didn't already know, we (NASA) changed our PTW limits for 2010 back to something closer that we used in 2008. I know you already announced the rules but you might want to consider something that more closely aligns with our rules so you can get some greater crossover between our events. If your primary audience has to try to build a car to 3 different rules (NASA TT, NASA TA and your series) it's pretty difficult for anyone to take any single series seriously.

Just some food for thought.

The way I look at it Tim is.. If you're not on the Time Attack tire of choice you're not 100% committed...Why should we get penalized for their lack commitment besides, it takes a lot more than just tires to turn fast lap times...

Thanks for all the responses (especially Tage's novel) I have decided that there should be no penalty for R comps. I have been against the idea from the get go. I wanted to get others opinions to see where the consensus stood. Once again thanks for all the input guys!

NASA allows it under strict rules (safety/Tech)

Not sure about ASR

I agree with Tage. On a simpler note, I don't think a penalty makes sense when you have such large hp:weight ratio gaps for classes. If you had more classes, I think a R-comp penalty might become more valid sort of like the points system for NASAX which also accounts for HP:weight ratio.

I recal vaguely in a magazine that a certain EVO on 265/35/18 toyo R1rs was beating unlimited AWD classes which were running R comps.

I'm one of those people that have a seperate set of wheels and STREET tires for AutoX. They aren't shaved but the next set will be. I'll likely sell the ones I have with at least 1/2 the tread left too.. .

Does it require and special licence???
Do i need a roll cage?
Fire Suit?

Sorry for the stupid questions I couldn't find a website with all the rules. If I can pretty much just take my Ion Redline to the track and race with a helmet of coarse. I would want to try to attend as much as possible.

I don't remember off the top of my head but:

-last year I was doing mid-1:14's at PIR and I was doing 1:21.9's in the CCW config. Phil was doing low 1:13's/high 1:12's at PIR and was doing low 1:20's CCW. Now I do mid-1:12's so I'll be shooting for low 1:20's and he's doing high-1:10's so I'm sure he'll be aiming high 1:18's.

This is the unique round to the series starting this year. We all know how the weather gets a toasty around this time, so this event will take place during the evening/night. Looks like those hids will finally have some use other than blinding drivers on the highway. Practice sessions will start around 3ish, and the competition will begin around 8-9ish.* Price is normal $50.00 for the entire event.
