gift cards...a good gift?

i just read that KB toys no longer takes any giftcards bought in the past as they are bankrupt and are soon to go out of business.

this made me think...do you personally like giftcards as a gift?

its one step up from the most mindless gift (cash), but you need to at least know where the recipient likes to eat, shop, or entertain themselves.

before giftcards you actually had to spend time and find a gift that you were proud to give someone, now we just stop at circle-k and buy a chilli's giftcard...wtf...

Gift cards are the best things... I am picky with shit and most of the time get clothes from family that I would never wear so I'd prefer gift cards anyday.

Not really.. Because I can just buy a shirt I love with the gift card they give me..I think it has meaning when they buy you a gift card for a place you like vs an AMEX gift card.

so not to ask you to rank these, but say a person liked driving hondas, grilling meat, and the az cardinals

you thought of buying them:

a nice honda logo shirt (35$)
a grilling set with recpie book (35$)
a cardinals logo shirt (35$)
a gift card (35$)

what would be the most meaningful/useful gift?

a honda shirt to show their honda pride? a set of grilling tools that they will use everytime they grill? a cardinals shirt to show their team pride? or a 35$ gift card to some store and show that you know nothing about what their interests are and you are just "throwing money" at the problem of finding them a great gift?

kinda playing devil's advocate but i kinda want to know more peoples views on the issue.

What if that person needs for example gas, beer, munchies or groceries? If that person is in that situation then a nice honda logo shirt wont do him/her any good. That way the person can decide whats best for them at that particular moment.

I love giftcards, thats usually all I ask for on bdays and such. That way I can get what I really want, plus they can be traded/sold easily
