just bought a 2001 Civic EX with 127K miles , previous owner owned it for over a year & he has not replaced it yet & doesn't know if the owner before him did so . How do I know if this has been replaced ? Just don't wanna spend extra bucks for something that has been done prior

Remove the top cover and see if you can see a stamp on it.if it says something other than honda it is aftermaket and has been replaced at some time.
Inspect drive belts and see if they have heavy cracks in them.
There is no real way to tell if it has been replaced other than service history.under normal conditions it should be done every 90k,but because we live in extreme it is every 60k,so it should have been just replaced.
Hope this helps you.

take off the top cover or the middle of the cover and inspect the belt. inside the teeth check for cracking that will tell you a little bit more without taking it off.

you can also just look at the bolts on the timing cover and see if they have witness marks(signs of a socket being on them) it takes a bit more of a advanced eye, but it saves you time taking the cover off.
