Responding to demands from consumers, Jack in the Box said Monday that the burger chain is rolling out crispier French fries in restaurants starting this month.

The San Diego-based chain said the new fries pack more potato flavor and are crispier than the old fries.

The chain did not offer other details about the change. From the image, it appears that Jack in the Box has scrapped the natural-cut fries with a McDonald’s-inspired crispy-fry.

The new fries are priced at $1.39 (small), $1.79 (medium) and $1.99 (large).

3:45 p.m. update: Jack in the Box spokesman Brian Luscomb said the prices are unchanged from the previous natural-cut fries. The old fries, first introduced about five years ago, were scrapped because the chain saw an “opportunity to boost sales” with an improved fry, he said.

The curly fries are still an option on the menu. The new fries, which took more than a year to develop, feature a light potato coating which results in a tastier, and crispier fry, Luscomb said. The fat/calorie content for the fries are the same.

My take: Adding a new burger or side dish is routine this time of year for fast-food chains. But to tweak a mainstay item such as french fries can trigger trouble.

Take Carl’s Jr.

When the Southern California burger chain switched to natural cut fries in mid-2008, many fans balked. In fact, two years later many of my readers are still quite vocal about the change. Still, in an interview last year, Chief executive Andy Puzder told the Register that a majority of Carl’s Jr. consumers love the the premium fries, which were introduced to better complement the chain’s Six Dollar burgers.

Beyond telling us that consumers desired a better fry, Jack in the Box has left us with more questions than answers. Attempts to reach the chain’s corporate press office were unsuccessful this morning. When I do hear from them, I hope to learn how these new fries are cooked differently to make them crispier and if the product’s fat/calorie content are more or less. Also, what’s the status of the curly fries? Are they still an option? Stay tuned for an update. (Story updated this afternoon with comments/response from Jack in the Box spokesman.)

I bought this small order of new fries in Orange.
Instant review: Just stopped by my local Jack in the Box in Orange, where I was greeted by the most surly drive-thru cashier -EVER! I had to ask her twice if the store was selling the “new” fries. She kept barking “Yes. That’s $1.39 at the window.” What’s the rush? She didn’t even ask if I wanted anything else, which I did. Once at the window, I asked her if curly fries were still on the menu, and she kept wanting to “change” my order to curly fries. Sheesh. Finally, I got my answer from a shift manager. Yes, curly fries are still on the menu.

Thanks. Now, moving on to the new fries: I definitely like them better than the thicker natural-cut fries. They were thin, crispy and salty. However, McDonald’s still sells a better fry. Most Jack in the Box restaurants should get the new fries by the end of next week.
