I was considering taking a look at some newer s2k's or some with low mileage. Anything from 03-2008.

I've read a few things about the changes with the ap1 and the best year being the 03's because of the glass rear window and changes to the ecu as well?

I dont' know all that much about the AP2's I know that the newer ap2's took a hit in the rpm department down to 8300?? I think it is. What else has changed.

Also how much did you all pay for yours? I was looking at an 06 with 40k miles for 19,000 before negotiating? Is that too much for one?

I much preferr the AP2, the F22 makes more torqe the valve retainers are stronger and the transmission has been updated.

I paid 14,000 for a perfect 04 with 65,000 mi and i love the car.

All the AP2's (04-09), took the hit in the RPM band. They redline @ 8k, fuel cut @ 8300, where AP1's are at 9k (9200 fuel cut I believe).

02-03's are the same - both have glass window, interior changes, reprogrammed ECU, etc.

06+ are throttle by wire - maybe something to note if you want to go FI in the future. There are ways around it, and while they are a little expensive (Kpro), they work very well.
06+ also had VSA

Something to note, and you can look through all the changes specifically, but as the years have gone on, the suspension has been tweaked to dial out oversteer and make the car push like most all cars out there. 00-01 were the most tail happy, and I think by 09, they tuned nearly all of that out of them. Good or bad, depending on your goal ;)

Here is some decent info

Steering ratio is different as well

14.7:1 for the AP2

13.8:1 for the AP1 and CR model

Although I have an AP1 and I love it I would take an AP2 anyday.

Headlights and tailights are better

Body is cleaner. Everything is nicer overall.

But Ap1

9,000 rpms FTW

I love my 02 ap1 even though I may sell it. I have driven both ap1 and ap2. Not an obvious difference or at least I havent noticed to much of one. Both are nice and I prefer to have the 9k. Differences are more obvious when you plan to mod I would say.

06+ has the ability to use flashpro by hondata, which is fairly cheap. So if your going FI, its not that bad, unless you want onboard boost controller like the S300 has.

They changed things in the clutch/transmission. Ap2 have heavier flywheel etc. AP2's have a clutch release valve that helps prevent from dumping hte clutch which could cause damage to the transmission / rear end. Which can be annoying for drag racing (but thats not why you buy an S2000). Though this can be removed.

Glass rear window = great. The top tears on all S2000's though they just recently sent out a service notice about modifying the stock frame to make it last longer. If you are under warrantee's most dealers will treat you damn well and replace the top, modify it etc. Even if your top is not torn and you are under warrantee GET THIS DONE. Hell they even re-tinted my windows :)

Ap2 has more torque, which makes daily driving a little more pleasing, as the low end is so weak on both of these cars. Feels worse then our civic at times. haha. So in reality the RPM really makes no difference, they both put down very similar #'s and the Ap2 has more torque. RPM's is over rated IMO. (but i wish i could rev up to 9 for increased power band, can get irritating shifting so much)

I paid ~21,000 for my 2006. 16,200 miles. From honda, however i got a pretty high trade in on my Acura. (Full KBB retail. not the trade in value).

What's the big deals with the ap2's and going forced induction is there an article or can you explain?

Honestly i think it has to do with the fact many Ap2 owners have money (haha i wish i did!). and it has a 2.2 litre. Actually about even for who have boost from what ive seen in the S2000 community. You should really check out s2ki.com its like HT for s2ki only, really friendly croud. And arizona has one of the largest most active communities (we had ~40 S2000's cruise up to prescott a few weeks back).

But with flash pro its easy, if you go 2006+ and get a SoS Supercharger its literally BOLT ON, it has its own oil system so you don't even need oil lines. You give them your ECU they flash it w/ hondata's reflash program, and you just plug it in. so you don't even have to hit the dyno (which i would do anyway personally but its up to the end user hehe).

If you can afford it i would go AP2, its more civilized, softer rear end, more torque, more tuned, 06+ has stability control which is great if you havn't had a RWD, and great around town so you don't push "too far". And it can be 100% turned off for track events. Also less miles commonly on AP2's. AP1's (especially closer to '00) Are more raw, didn't evne have a clock. they are considered more 'agressive'.

a lot of info in the thread below.

06-09 can use flash pro.

all other years can run kpro. It involves removing some sensors and changing the valve cover.

Hardtopguy has a good price on a bundle package. http://www.hardtopguy.com/store/product.php?productid=804

99 to about mid 02 they had different oil jets in the block. 99 to mid 02 they had 2 oil squirters. around mid 2002-09 they started putting in oil jets with 4 squirters.

its highly reccomended to have these change out if you are going to be tracking the car or go FI.

I personally prefer the 04-05. ap2 non-drive by wire.

good luck with your purchase do lots of searching on s2ki.

Check out the Under the Hood stickies and the S2000 Talk stickies.

^^^ smart man

I heart my AP1 though

NA the AP2 can make 235ish to the ground with bolt ons and tuning......on 10psi and a conservative tune 330whp
with tuning you can rev to 8600 no problem

NA Ap1s make about 220ish and about 300-315 on 10psi and conservative tune..I rev mine to 9200 every day

SoS SC kit will do 350whp no problems and almost 400 on a StageII kit

AP1 is definitely more tail happy.....while the AP2 is definately more composed and it has the nanny button as well

I paid $32,300 for mine......9 years ago. If I were looking to purchase one today, I'd pick up an 03. 03 was the last year for AP1 so it has upgraded interior, glass window, better banjo bolts, and still 9k rpm. But that's just my opinion.

Well said.. but, you can always put all of that stuff on the car as well. Or you can buy my car that already has all of it and a hard top.:samuri:
