View Full Version : August 14-15 - NASA Arizona @ Firebird West

Most of the HPDE groups were sold out for the June event. Despite warmer temps, I expect August will be no different. There is no reason to wait to register, especially since the prices are a little lower if you register now!

https://www.nasaproracing.com/event/1092

I will post up a detailed schedule once we get a gauge for the group sizes. Here is what I can commit to at this time.

* Early start (~6AM) and early end (~10:30AM) before the triple digit heat kicks in!
* HPDE1 (Sat ONLY) will get at least three 15 min sessions on track (1st one will be 20 min if there's no schedule delays)
* HPDE2, 3 & 4 will get at least three 15 min sessions both Sat & Sun
* UMS Tuning Time Attack (Sun ONLY)
* Time Trial will get three 10-15 mins sessions on track (at a minimum the 1st two sessions will be split Big / Small Bore)
* Race will get at least two warm ups, one qualify and one (20-25 min) race

Don't forget that this event is a TT and Race points event. It is your last chance to get the minimum number of events in to qualify for Nationals as well as your last change to ensure the car is fully sorted before Nationals. Most important, after the August event, we won't have another event until OCTOBER @ PIR!!! If you miss this event, that is a LONG time before you get to run with us again.

We hope to see you all at the track!

That last event was only hot because we had to stick around for the all the 'extra ciriculars' after the last session.
If we could have just rallied out of there I don't think it would have felt so hot.

In HPDE1, you are simply learning the basics of driving on track. There is no racing in any of our HPDE level groups. Once you get comfortable enough to go into groups like TT or Race, you can make the decision on racing the clock or racing door to door. But, those are still at least a year or more down the road. Right now, just focus on getting out there and getting hooked after your first day. The rest will be history.

Exactly what I wanted to hear lol... was worried that even on hpde1 it was still racing. Is there any inspection? Like anything that your car must have in order to get on the track?

Yea ravi is the one that pretty much got me to switch my mind to track racing lol... Sent him a PM but no response

Get on track you need a car that passes basic inspection, good tires, no leaking fluids, battery tied down and working brake lights. Also need driver and passenger seats with all mounting bolts and seat belts. And a helmet.

From the CCR's found at http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf

11.3 Required Safety Equipment - Driver

Disclaimer: Conformance to these regulations is the driver’s responsibility. These
regulations do not guarantee or imply that injuries or death will not occur. If there are
any questions or problems with these regulations it is the reader’s responsibility to
contact the NASA office, or a NASA official immediately.

All participants should utilize equipment that meets or exceeds these minimum
requirements, while driving on track (Note- passenger equipment must meet or exceed
these minimum requirements; but do not necessarily have to match the driver’s
equipment):

1. Use a proper fitting helmet that meets Snell 1990 (SA1990; M1990) or newer (or
equivalent) standards for cars or motorcycles.

2. The driver and any passenger must utilize modern style* stock seatbelts in very
good condition, or a DOT approved restraint system, while operating a vehicle on
the track. Restraint system requirements are listed in Section #11.4.8. *Lap
belts used without any shoulder restraints are not permitted.

3. Non-synthetic fabric clothing (i.e. cotton). At least footwear, a T-shirt and long
pants must be worn. Individual track requirements may be different.

4. No open toed shoes, shorts, or tank tops may be worn in the car while on track.

5. Drivers should wear eye protection such as goggles, safety glasses or face
shields preferably made of new impact resistant materials.

6. It is recommended that any corrective eyeglass material used be made of safety
glass type that meets U.S. Government standards.

11.4 Automobile Technical Regulations
Every automobile entered in any NASA sanctioned HPDE event should meet or exceed
these requirements. NASA makes a strong effort to offer every member an affordable
way to participate in HPDE events. NASA is aware of the costs involved in maintaining
a vehicle up to standards, and strives to keep the most reasonable standards in order to
keep costs to a minimum. However, there are some things that can make the event
more dangerous for everyone involved. These are the things that NASA cannot afford to
be flexible about. The NASA inspectors will be glad to work with any member in order to
help bring their car into compliance with the safety standards. Things that are not major
safety related items might warrant a one-time waiver when prudent to do so. Any
changes made to material items that may affect safety may fall under scrutiny, and may
result in disallowance of entry. For example a simple “gutting” of a door without the
proper additional protection as specified in the competition section may warrant
disallowance of entry. Car owners are encouraged to contact the NASA office before
making any modifications from the stock configuration.

11.4.1 Appearance
All entered vehicles must be in good condition and appearance. Vehicles with excessive
body damage, primered body panels, etc., are not allowed. The vehicle must meet the
“50/50” rule, which means they must look undamaged and straight at fifty (50) mph from
fifty (50) feet.

11.4.2 Wheels and Tires
The general condition of the tire and rim assembly must be good. There should be no
cracks or other damage to the wheel. There should not be cords exposed, bubbles, or
other visible damage on the tire. All lug nuts must be present and tightly hold the tire
and rim assembly to the car’s hub. No hubcaps or beauty rings are allowed. Imitation
“knock-offs” must be removed.

Our Regional Director, who also posts on this site, has made some Arizona only rules as well that you should check into to see if it overturns/changes anything that I have posted. Those supplemental rules can be found @ http://www.nasaaz.com/classing-rules/2010-supplemental-rules/.

While you are on www.nasaaz.com, stop in and register for our forums and introduce yourself. You will feel right at home after just a few posts. We have an amazing welcoming party.

I would do an event or 2, make sure you like it, before you invest a few hundy in a helmet.

I have heard that Ride Now on Arizona Ave just north of Elliot sometimes has last years helmets for like 50 bucks. Check it out. Also, while my post earlier states that we require a M1990/SA1990 helmet, we do recommend that you get the newest available. The standard can change and I would hate to see you buy an older helmet now and then suddenly have to change in a few months. I am not saying that this will happen but it can.

Well, the CCR says 1990 and there is no Arizona Region supplemental rule that states 1995 that I could find. So, I hope you arent failing people for that.

EDIT:: After in person discussion with Kinetic, there will be a supplemental rule being added to require 1995 helmets.

What "DelNoob" said. We chose not to have an event in September this year because of the weak turn out during our September event last year which took place during Nationals. The thing is, Nationals is typically ran on the East Coast but after a while they realized that the West Coast needed something as well. That being said, National is now rotating locations. 2 years at Miller, 2 years at Mid-Ohio. I expect the September event to come back to life in 2011 as Nationals heads back East and most of our guys will not be following but that is to be left for Tage to make the final decision.

Since this is not the NASA forum and there is not a local NASA event in September...there is another "org" this is hosting an event during the weekend that is Nationals. Also, it is at a track that NASA has not run (AFAIK) ever. ;)
