Did you replace the sleeves as well? The sleeves are what cause it to grind when shifting

standard trannys are easy to fix.. tear apart. put back to gether.. now auto is a dif storry... if u likei have mondays off i can come over and see whats wrong with it and have u get the parts and ill rebuild it for you.. only think ill have to do is borrow apress to get the main bearing back on.. pm me if ur interested. ur syncros are made out of a bronze.. when people are driving down the road and force the car (aka slam it into second) trying to haul ass. u can rip metal chunks off of the synroh and over time of this happening.. ur syncrho can no longer lock up to the main shaft or next gear.. therefore createing it to grind or just not have that gear.. and in some cases u can well ur main shaft or bearring to the tranny housing.. but its unlikley since u didn thave ur tranny lock up on you it just went to neutral.. so sounds to me like a syncro is bad and u need to get another one..

Its crazy how easy a trans can be and how much a shop charges. most peeps dont know they can throw in a used trans for a fraction of what a trans place would charge to rebuild
