So I finished my LS VTEC build and it was running fine for a couple of months. Then one day I started to get oil leaks. It was still being broken in so I never even took it past 5500 rpm. The leak eventually got worse and I ended up putting the LS head back on. Here's the weird part though, my head studs had backed out. When I removed the bolts I was able to just hand turn them out. I didn't use ARP head studs but they were brand new oem GSR head studs and yes I torqued to them to spec, I have a factory service manual. Anyone had a similiar problem? For now I am scrapping the build and building a B20 VTEC but this time around I will use ARP head studs.

Are you sure you torgued them to spec. may have been a good idea to check the torgue again after a days of break in tooo. just my opinion.

I thought you were supposed to re torque after a couple hundred miles? or maybe that's just for the arp's.

GSR's didn't come with head studs so you couldn't have been using GSR head studs...

Use some loctite thread locks. Its always good to use that stuff. I use that in all the bolts on all our builds. So far so good. But that's just how I do it, others might have better opinions.

loctite on headbolts. never heard that before. And to the original poster, what u say makes no sence. if u were able to hand loosen head bolts out. You would of been blowing oil everywhere. And to where did u have this orginal oil leak at, that made u swap the head back to ls.

I don't think you can use loctite on head bolts considering you have to coat them with some oil. The car did run with loose head bolts. It was just spewing oil out of where the block and head meet. As I mentioned, it ran fine for a few weeks then all of sudden the leak started and eventually got worse.

More specific, it was leaking in the area under the distributor and under the intake manifold.
