Goal for the year is to come in sliced and shredded at the Wbff worlds amateur in Vegas and earn my pro card. Hopefully pick up more sponsors as well.

Ill be competing in the muscle model class.

I'm coasting at 198 now until my next bulk cycle next month. Ill get to about 215 and stay there until about June when ill start dieting.

Hams. It will make your legs thicker from the side.

I think getting up to 215-20 and staying there for a while is a good plan. Don't worry about body fat. Just grow.

I was thinking the same for weight. I don't eat junk plus my ecto genetics so even when bulking so I usually stay lean

I split hams and quads so leg growth has picked up speed. Especially those stubborn hammies.

My goals for 2013 are mostly strength based, don't really care about aesthetics right now:
Bench 405+
SOHP 250+
Deadlift 575+

These are my most recent progress pics from about 3 weeks ago at 210:

I'm not exactly sure because I haven't tested my 1rm in a long time and I'm in the beginning phase of 531

I think I benched 285 X 10 Monday and deadlifted 420 X 10 Tuesday. Based on that my "calculated 1rm" is probably close to 375-80.

Ill know more in the coming weeks as shit gets heavier.

My best is 245. I failed at 250 twice. This year I would like to break 250, and maybe hit 265..lol We will see.

It is a really hard lift, that is why you hardly EVER see anyone doing it...lol. It is also VERY technical. Just keep working on becoming more and more technical. I am sure if we caught a session one day I could help you out.

Thats one of my goals. To made some good gains in the over head. I stalled at 120 before I reset and hopdully this time I can pass that mark.

Also would love to find a good workout partner to help motivate and push me some.

Im lifting pretty heavy in this cuttrying to stay in the 1200lb club(squat, dead and bench. I keep you guys updated and if anyone wants to take a trip to the bod pod to get a real body fat measurement let me know. This is the pod I have access to

Welcome back.

In my experience the bod pod is good until you get REALLY lean. For some reason it becomes very unreliable at that point.

I was actually talking to John Meadows about this and his experience mirrors mine. He said he was in contest shape, striated glutes/hams, and bod podded at like 10% lol Hydrostatic had him under 5% iirc.

Yeah I hear ya. The pod I use had Dave Henry @14% a week from Mr O 2012. He took 2nd @202lbs and was clearly less then 5%. The guy that operates the pod says bigger guys tend to get off readings because of the size of the pod. I barely fit in it lol but like a Dyno it should be used to measure success. I I'll be hitting it every 4 weeks as I cut to see where it has me.

Ya it definitely gets wonky. Lol

I have most of my clients do it like you said to check progress although once they get lean enough we just go by the mirror or calipers.

I'm going to be doing my training partners prep and he wants to get in the bodpod before we start. He's 6'5 310. I think he's going to have a panic attack in that fucking thing. Lol

I think any heavy lifting is over for me this year. I was deadlifting Sunday night and on the last rep of my last set my back shit out. Spent all yesterday in bed unable to move at all. Second time I've hurt my SI joint in 3 years :(. Last time it took over a year of light weight rehabbing to get full movement back with minimal pain

Let me ask this. Are your hip flexors really tight? A lot of the time what you are describing is actually your hips, hip flexors, and hamstrings. It feels like it is in the lower back/upper butcheek but actually stems from the hips.

I did just this about 4 weeks ago. I could barely move. Intense pain from my low back(spine area) that radiated to the left almost into the very top of my ass.

Some aggressive rehab, and really working the prirformas, and psoas and I am good as new.

I would be doing some deep piriformis stretching. And start doing these with a tennis ball. Beyond that try and really open up your hips.

Actually yes. I've had to switch to an extremely wide stance for squat because anything relatively narrow is unbarable on my back. It takes a while for my hips to loosen up and let me get deep, but it feels much better. I also switched to low bar squats which made a world of a difference. I'll grab a tennis ball today. My father in law actually recommended the same thing a couple days before I did this :retard:. As far as bands, I don't have any but I can buy some. I need to buy them either way.

How severe was your pain when it happened to you? It took everything I had to crawl 30 feet to the bath tub. I couldn't stand up right until mid day yesterday. Now that the pain has faded a bit, it feels like the pain is in my lower back, above my tail bone but to the left and right of my spine and shoots up my back. Thank you, I really appreciate the info

It was bad man. It hurt to breathe. I could not take my shoes/socks off. Putting my pants on was hard as hell for days after, I had to drop one side down to the floor and step my leg in, then drop the other side and step in because I could not bend at all, nor raise my leg.

The reason I ask about bands is because you can do some mobility drills like this to open the hips up. This works better than "stretching". For the time being though I would be doing piriformis stretches, and trying to work out that area with a ball.

I literally grinned as I read that because you described it to a T, down to the way you put your pants on. I'm going to get on the stretching asap. The times I have pain is when there is compression on my back (standing up for example), however if I hang from the power rack there is absolutely 0 pain whatsoever. Was this the case for you as well?

I don't recall as I don't remember hanging. I thought it was fucked up really bad though. (actually now that I think more about it as soon as it happened I jumped up on a pull up station and just hung. It totally relieved the pain while hanging)

My hips/hams are very very tight and I neglected mobility work big time.

I still slack to a degree. After reading this it reminds me to keep hitting mobility work. Lol

Put it this way. After the injury I did that piriformis stretch on a bench, and where it was stretching/pulling was right where it hurt.

Let me ask this. When you dl for reps do you touch and go?
Hopefully if you're aggressive in your approach you'll make a speedy recovery. Ps advil/ibuprofen is your friend.

Awesome, thanks again. Yes, I always touch and go. I always pause for a second though to make sure I'm tight before I pull again for fear of hurting myself. Like I said, the weird thing about this was I pulled my last rep, and it happened as I was putting the weight down.

I've been resetting every rep these days. Helps me keep my form in check. I tend to start stiff legging it(ie not dropping my hips).

I know a lot of guys who just do singles now. So instead of 10 you might do a single walk away for 10-15 seconds and pull another. Do 10 of those.

Shit if you're in your own home gym just slam/drop the weight.

I'm a form nazi. Its to the point I think my form has hindered me from increasing my max. I'll overthink the lift rather than just lifting the weight up.

It wasn't until recently that I started doing reps. I used to do a few sets of lighter weight to warm up, and then do singles up until I maxxed out. I'm pulling with a cheap bar and steel plates, so dropping them would be a disaster right now. I was holding off on having the DL platform made, but after this I may bump it on the priority list.

Mikey. I was just looking at the new years resolution thread from 2009 and seen my pics. FML!! Man have I gained a lot of weight and damn near have no more muscles in sight lol.

Junk food is the damn devil. I quit smoking almost 2 years ago after being a smoker 13 years. That shit is way easir to quit than junk food, junk food is a hell of a drug, I'm not scared to admit that I'm addicted to large portions of junk food. Too often my taste buds over power my mind. I'm currently at my heaviest I've ever been. 6'2 315 pounds.. Honestly it's depressing looking in a mirror.

I quit smoking because I wanted to be healthy for my daughter. Now my bad eating habits have gotten out of control and my health is turning for the worse. It's hard to admit but it is. I'm past a yearly goal. I'm not getting younger, starting this year i wanna get healthy and stay healthy for the rest of my life.

Try and take baby steps man. Unlike smoking sometimes people do better making small changes rather then all at once.

Try and make small attainable short term goals, with a long term goal in the background. Nothing motivates like progress.

If you are drinking soda or sugary drinks/juices. Maybe cut that first. For example.

Do you have access to a gym? Cardio equipment?

Maybe I could help you out. Shoot me a PM if it is something you are interested in, and are ready to commit 100%.

Some people like working with bodybuilders, and athletes, and while I enjoy that, what I enjoy more is the "avg joe". I enjoy seeing people make life altering changes to both their appearance and their health(bloodwork).

im more than ready. i just need some guidance.

i cancelled my LA fitness to join golds. i walked in to golds and found out the GM at the location i would be going to is someone i wish to avoid because a altercation would go down. so i decided im going to rejoin at LA due to it being on my route to shop and i could easily make it a 8am routine every day.

ive never had the proper guidance to losing weight by eating healthy. its always been diet pills and eating once a day, wich i know is so unhealthy its ridiculous. the yoyo affect is insane. this time around i put on 55 pounds. diet pills is the only thing that works to curb my junk food intake. i try to take advice from "trainers" and they all seem full of shit and cant seem to provide a good example of someone they trained who was a success.

you however. have shown living proof on this forum of a guy you helped out..and it was affective. thats what i want.

ive never had the proper guidance to losing weight by eating healthy. its always been diet pills and eating once a day, wich i know is so unhealthy its ridiculous. the yoyo affect is insane. this time around i put on 55 pounds. diet pills is the only thing that works to curb my junk food intake. i try to take advice from "trainers" and they all seem full of shit and cant seem to provide a good example of someone they trained who was a success.

.

IME the biggest hurdle is figuring out what makes you tick, and what it is going to take for you to STOP the junkfood binges(besides diet pills). You shouldn't have to kill your appetite in order to stop eating these things. There IS another way, and it is a matter of just figuring out what.

Let me tell you, I am a junkfood fiend. So I know where you are coming from. Sweets are my biggest weakness.

Let me ask you this. Does this sound like you. Go far too many hours without eating, then by the time you eat, you are so hungry, you don't give a fuck what you eat, eat shit, and far too much of it?

How are ya feeling?

I did some banded Dl's today. First time. LOVE em.

MUCH better. Went to work today and with my backpack on the pain was tolerable. As the pain subsides more I can pinpoint where it's stemming from and I'm 99.9% sure you were on the money. Thank you so much enough for the advice man, I can't begin to tell you how down I was.

Good luck man! We've got some quality lifters on AZHT who can help you. As Dsquared said, gotta stick to it. You can want it, and we can feed guidance, but without action its a lost cause. You've quit smoking and created a brand for yourself known not only in the Arizona import scene, but nation wide. No reason you can't do this.

I'm sure a lot, if not all of you have seen this video. I've watched it probably a hundred times and it still gets me going. They created an audio version of this with music I sometimes listen to when I'm lifting even

Actually just got out of the shower, rolled around on the ball and got up with 0 pain. Still some tightness in my lower back, but I can't complain considering its only been 3 days.

I'm glad you showed me this because, like you, I had pain after every squat and DL day. I had even considered buying stock in ibuprofen at the rate I emptied bottles. I'm sure I'll slack off once I start feeling better until the almighty iron puts my ego and I in check. I think that's just our nature as men though. The goal for this year was to cut down to 185 by march but it's looking more like May now, but i plan on maintaining that weight for the year. Caloric intake is at 2000-2200 a day, increased cardio to one mile before lifting and three after lifting for a total of 20 miles a week, (fucking hate doing cardio the day after leg day lol). I'll post pics once i reach my goal weight, i see myself leaning down already but still have allot of work to do.

Man I gotta say. Looking and reading thru the goal threads really motivates me more. I just started working out the beginning of this year. I gotta say I couldnt go 1/4 miles without loosing my breath. Since I started working out and doind cardio im up to 1.5 miles in 18min.. Man does that feel great. The lifting im still a noob.
I honestly dont know my max but its not a lot. I really want to stay at my current weight but with a lot less bf. Im 190 lbs but I dont know my bf. I hear diet is key but honestly I have no idea wat kind of diet or wat plan to use. I cut all the junk and soda.
If anybody can help me on finding out wat kind of diet I would need to get lean I would greatly appreciate it.

Most I pulled was 550, and benched 375. However 375 was touch and go, where as this 365 was paused, and I waited for the "press" command from my partner.

525 was the most I pulled without a belt however.

I have a little aggravation in the area that got injured. I have been trying to stretch it out today.

I never have, up until Monday. I did some 3 board presses after that 365 set. Ended up doing 335 x 5. The first set I did 315 x 5 to get a feel for the boards, but I was bringing the bar WAY high(ie. towards my upper chest instead of lower chest) because I couldn't gauge my normal bar path with the boards there.. After that set, I corrected things, and it felt much better.

Going to do some speedwork tomorrow.

Aww shit. Getting there buddy

Thanks mikey. I've only been in the gym lifting for 6 months. Everything before was just cardio. So ya it's hard to keep it up, especially since I'm still a big gym noob

Ha tell me about a gym noob. I just started a month ago. Ive done a ton of research on just about everything. From eating healthy, counting calories, and gym ecxercises.. I feel like a weakling compared to alot of people at the gym. But that just motivates me to hitting my goals. From the cardio side I hit 1.5 miles in 12minutes, I lost 10lbs since I started and ive noticed my strength getting better. My max at BenchPress was 1/2 a plate lol.. Now I can do 1 1/2 plates 5X..
It really feels great.

Stay safe. Get your form down, and get technically proficient before worrying too much about weight.

If need be film yourself on the big lifts(bench, dead, overhead press, squat) and post up for critique. Even better get someone who knows what they are doing, to help train you for a few sessions. And I can't stress KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING enough. There are plenty of "big" guys who have no clue about proper technical form.

RC. Stay on track man, and you wont even recognize yourself in a few months.

X2 on this part especially. Control is sooo essential. I see it day after day, guys grab these big ass weights and have sloppy form. Take the ego out of the lift and focus on the movement, the muscle, the pump.

You should be squeezing each contraction and really focus on not bouncing the weight around.

A good video to watch is the training with Kai series on youtube, he's all of controlled movements.

I'm not so much referring to that more so the technical side of things. You can have slow controlled movements and still be technically challenged. For example myself. I always lifted with super controlled negatives on bench press, very tight form, but from a technical standpoint I was a mess. Not until I had someone who was truly a technician watching me and coaching my form did I realize how bad it was(technically). It was slow, controlled, and looked pretty to the average person but get around people who know what to look for and it was not good.

Bench pressing is more than lying on a bench and pressing, for example.

The pump, and all that is not really a factor in strength training and especially shouldn't really be a factor on big compound lifts. For instance "the pump" is the last thing on my mind on a deadlift. Or say any of the Olympic lifts, these are impossible to do slow, or for a pump. Bicep curl, and more isolation oriented lifts sure pump away.

Being fast on the concentric portion of the lift is important for force generation. The more speed, and explosiveness, the better. If I asked someone to jump onto a picnic table it would be an explosive movement. In Westside Bb training(regarded as the strongest gym in the world) they focus two days a week to "dynamic effort" which is basically moving the weights as fast as possible, and working on speed/force generation.

There is a place for pump training, and for explosive fast movements, just depends on the lift and your goals.

(not all this is directed at you D as I know you know this, just clarifying what I meant)

Yes well said. It's about the goal. Spec is a power lifter, I am a bodybuilder. The training is different in some parts of the movements like the focus on concentric and eccentric phases.

Honestly he's not really going all that slow in that video. His curling is pretty damn quick. I think he got a bit more fanatical with the super slow shit lately.

I'm sure even there though he's super focused in his head on what he's training.

Also consider the lifts. Going slow on isolation movements is one thing but watch him bench here. He's fairly explosive.

I see you big guys talk a lot about LA being a sorry gym. Is it just for real body builders, or just in general?
I also have a question. I started drinking 100% whey protein shakes. I have a lot of people tell me to drink one after and before my work out. Then I have other people saying I can substitute the protein for a meal. Who do I listen to? I see a lot of contradictions between the both.

Not really a right or wrong way. Many lines of thinking when it comes to pre/post workout nutrition. I wouldn't over think it at this point. One thing I'd avoid is anything that's going to impact your workout negatively. Stick to things easily digested.

As far as why commercial gyms like LA suck so bad is not only for "bodybuilders" or advanced lifters. It's hard to push yourself in an environment like that. Plus the sheer lack of speciality equipment (reverse hyper, glute ham raise, deadlift platform, real benches, db's that go above 125, various bars, etc).

I'd much rather lift in an environment that pushes me. I'm lucky enough however to have two training partners who are both much stronger than me so that pushes me.

Probably less that you weren't wearing a belt, and more your form.

What is your budget for a belt? That will dictate my recommendation, but if you want a good belt plan to spend about $100.

Yea try not to hyper extend at the top.

As for a belt I would go with one of these options.

Inzer lever. I have one of these in 13mm(thickness), but imo 10mm is fine. These are cool because they are easy on/off. Downside is if you need to change the size you need a screwdriver. However that is only if you go up/down in waist size considerably.
http://www.houseofpain.com/product/powerlifting-belts/lever-belt-10mm.html

Inzer single prong.
http://www.houseofpain.com/product/powerlifting-belts/1-prong-forever-belt-10mm.html

Elite FTS p2 belt. This one you can get in either 13mm or 6.5mm. Just depends on your goals. The 6.5mm belt is great for everyday training, etc. If you think you are going to do powerlifting one day then the 13mm might be better. HOWEVER if you decide down the road you want to do PL then you could always just buy another belt specifically for a competition.

6.5mm
http://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=114&pid=5853

13mm
http://www.flexcart.com/members/elitefts/default.asp?m=PD&cid=114&pid=5653

I think my preference for you would be the 10mm Inzer single prong, or 6.5mm p2 belt. Probably would be more comfortable than a lever.

Make sure when you measure for a belt you DO NOT GO BY YOUR PANT SIZE. You need to measure where the belt is going to go, around your belly button. And don't suck in your stomach.

Hope that helps.

I almost forgot this belt. This is a great belt for deadlifting. You can use it for squatting as well, but isn't as rigid as say a 10mm belt. Definitely a good option for deadlifting, and should be good enough for squatting until you get up in weight.

You squat super wide like me. I've never wore wraps before, and only used a belt maybe a dozen times. I've always been afraid that using wraps/belt, my body will become dependent on it and neglect areas of growth/strength. I guess it's kind of a neccessary evil when it comes to high weight max lifts though and I'll have to accept it.

When is your meet? April?

I have a bad habit of not wearing my belt. Honestly I am probably going to buy one of the above mentioned belts because I HATE deadlifting in my 13mm lever belt.

Even so just don't put the belt on until you get up in weight for example, or set "belt and beltless PR's) etc. Mix it up.

I will usually do something like this if working up to a single:
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 3-5
365 x 3
405 x 1
455 x 1(add belt)
495 x 1
525 x 1

So you still get a lot of work in with no belt. And also like I said you can do "beltless lifts", and just count them different. I think 525 is my best beltless DL.

Wraps I need to get used to ASAP. Once the meet is past I will likely only use them here and there on heavy max effort type lifts.

It is April 27

A "dip belt"? Sorry if its a stupid question I've only ever bought gloves before so I'm not sure if there's attachments for these belts to add plates or if they're separate belts.

Same here man. I think it's because I see so many people wearing belts, wraps and straps the minute they walk in, to the minute they leave, I don't want to be "that guy". You still have quite a bit of time man, no reason at all you can't hit a 500 squat at the meet. I think your biggest challenge will be mental given it's a completely different environment from what you're used to.

Off topic, but how tall is you're training partner? He looks like hes going to just pick that entire rack up like a toothpick and walk away

Yeah i just want one for the days i test my maximum on the big lifts which is maybe once a month but I'd like to be able to push myself a little more with less fear, i think I'm going to go with the single prong 10mm belt, as far as for adding weights do i just buy a second belt? A "dip belt"? Sorry if its a stupid question I've only ever bought gloves before so I'm not sure if there's attachments for these belts to add plates or if they're separate belts.

Yea you need a dip belt

Yea a dip belt is a completely different thing.
http://www.roguefitness.com/dip-belt.php

BTW I just talked to my training partner and he said this is a great belt. It is a little cheaper than the inzer, and comes already much more broken in. My inzer is over a year old and still stiff as fuck.

Plus you can get it sized right to you. which is better because you will have more adjustments as you gain/loose weight.

He is like 6'4/5 300lb..hah

The mental thing is what I am worried about. I want to put 500 on my back before the meet so that is one less mental barrier I need to break in that environment.

That's unreal lol. Like I told you before, I'm the same way. I probably look like a dick at the gym because I want nothing to do with anyone.

On another note, I ended up joining Fitness 1 again. They bought back their old gym off 35th and union hills(metro gym) and opened it on Monday. Worked out perfectly because after my experience with the owner of metroflex, I refused to give him a dime of my money. I don't think I could ask for a better gym given the circumstances. They have a GHR (the kind that sit on the floor), reverse hyper, fat bar, fat grip db's, safety squat bar and a ton of other shit you wouldn't expect a gym to have. Plus everything is old, beat up, and has character. No pretty silver spaceship looking equipment with rubber coated everything

Just did compounds and body weight exercises but everything felt good kept looking at my form in the mirrors so tonight should be fun :goodjob:

Not this fella. He stacked the machine full of plates and was grabbing the handles, jerking his whole body back to get the weight up. It was a joke. All I had to do was tap the lever under the arm when he was done

Aside from some forced reps at the end, if you can't get on your tippy toes, then you have too much weight on there.

Well the belt i ordered hasn't shipped apparently the package i was tracking was the free beanie lol so I'm still waiting on thatlast couple workouts were good, I've been allot more careful watching my form and staying consistent every single rep. My main protein sources are pretty simple

1. 1/2 bag thawed boneless skinless chicken thighs
2. Slap on George Foreman
3. Cook
4. Eat throughout the day with franks red hot

1. 1 can tuna
2. Open and strain
3. Choke down

I eat a lot of shit though too, Del taco, Donuts, Doritos, chips ahoy, etc.

I went with the 6.5mm single prong inzer only because of sizing, i was only a couple inches into the large size on the 10mm so if i lost a few inches I'd have to buy another belt, figured I'd get more use out of that one and like you said if i do decide to compete i could get another one later although I'm not looking that far ahead at this time i still consider myself a noob

Cool.actually got to check it out in person the other day at the gym. Guy I know just got it and said he loved it.looked nice and thin but still supportive.

When you use a belt you want it snug but not super tight because you want to take a huge breath into your belly and push out super hard into the belt. That creates inter-abdominal pressure which stabilizes everything. If your shoulders rise when you take the breath you're not breathing correctly.

Couple videos that might help

Therefore, the level of lazy and complacency I achieve by being able to handle 100 lbs is comfortable. I figure that is an acceptable power to weight ratio for my activities lol.

Surprisingly, that is impressive to me. It is weird, as I have gotten stronger, my ability to do normal stuff like that only marginally improved. I mean I am stronger than I was before most likely, but it really doesn't apply the same.

I surely don't want to be carrying 100lb bags of sand..hah
