i have a civic with a pioneer deck and alpine type s all around
its frustrating that when i put up the voulume half way i get sound distortion it basically sounds
like shit , its not even that loud i was expecting a decent sound.

i was wondering how i can better my sound ? should i hook them up to an amp if so what specs?

im just looking to get a little bass and good sound any suggestions ??? please help

Did you hook up the speakers yourself? I just installed some polks in my prelude with no amp and they sound great running off the stock head unit. What is your head unit rated at? Are you using the radio or your ipod?

im using a USB flashdrive and yes i hooked them up myself im sure i did it right. im not sure about the rating im gonna have to check that out.
mine sound good until i turn it up when a song i like comes on but it sounds sketchy like if my speakers are about to blow.

RMS Power Output 14 watts
Peak Output 50 watts
RMS Power Bandwidth 20-20kHz
Preamp Outputs 4-channel

is that what you meant by rating?

What's your eq set at?

did you just crank treble to max? lol

usdmcivic

i dont think its maxed out , it has pre-set eq and its set to normal . so im guessing eveything is in the middle... what setting should i go with ?

Depends, you can't crank a headunit very high

I believe the audiophiles will agree, you set the volume to the max you ever listen to, and adjust your bass/mid/treble settings to exactly how you like, then stay below that.

i listen to it at a normal volume around 40 and it gts upto 80ish.. but never go that high . once i go to like 42 45 it starts sounding bad.. if i cant crank head my head unit alot how would i solve this ? i know my friends 95 accord sounds nicer and he has stock speakers , something must be wrong with my set up

thanks for your input this actually helped a bit.. the sound is better . but it still doesnt sound like it should... im gonna look into an amp for the rear speakers .

You should look into an amp for your fronts, don't worry about the back yet

do you have separate tweeters or a crossover?

A large group believe powering your front speakers and setting them up best makes way more difference than powering the back speakers.

i have stock ex tweeters , i've seen that the nissan maximas have a stock mini amp and theres alot at the junkyard i go to, do you have any idea if that will work ?

im kinda curious to know if i wired the speakers correctly now, is there a positive negative way to them ? im not really knowledgeable on audio lol

Running those off the deck will sound ok but a decent 4ch amp will get you the sound you're wanting without stressing the receivers built in amp.

This is a decent amp and should work for what you want. No idea what deck you have so no idea if you have the settings available to do this but...run more bass less treble through the rear channel and less bass more treble on the front channel.

Seal your door up it will make your door act like a box keeping your speakers from been "freeaired" and causes the speakers to distort. Also it will increase your mid bass a lot. I would look into getting a min of 4x75 amp those speakes will easy take it. (and yes i changed out speakers, had to find some that fit in my doors, but even with these they sounded good.) You don't to spend a lot of cash on it. A bonus is that your door will not sound like tin cans when you close them.

agreed i never run bass on my door speakers.. mids and highs only through the doors. bass on the doors will cause hella distortion and distortion is what blows the speakers. thats why subs were invented is for bass

Sound dampener, it adds mass to your panels...I would do a layer of closed cell high density foam also if you're really after good sound. There are diy's everywhere for both.

Heat is what "blows" speakers

Playing too high or too low of a frequency damages voice coils

To much current burns it up

to much current is nut a huge problem as long as it is clean. he is clipping which is not a clean which is what kills voice coils.

OP. basically what happens is your amp sends out a signal to the speakers. its shaped like a bunch of S's. the wave should be nice like that but when you push it to hard ( past the big old 14watts rms) it clips where the wave turns into squares. this is what sounds like shit and will kill your speakers.

Which causes heat and either the motor or voice coils to fail prematurely.

What about midbass? A 6.5 can produce a decent amount of midbass with a good amp. What else would you use 5 1/4 or 6.5 inches of speaker for?

Use door speakers for vocals and highs. You want low frequencies??... Get a sub

Was pointing out most of the time it comes back to heat being the final cause in why speakers "blow". Was only taking your post to the next step into why clipping causes blown speakers, not arguing with it.

So I just installed new jl 4" 2 way car speakers and they sound like caca.(only thing I can fit on the doors and dash)

Is there any other speaker that will have great sound?

I actually have those on the rear as 6x9 they don't have the bass feel like the jl up front but they do have a crispy sound. I guess a 4" speaker will only give you so much lol.

Joe, thanks for the recommendation.

I have 6.5s in the back and 5.25 in my doors, the alpine tweeters replaced the ones in my dash with a crossover that came in the box with it :)

it sounds pretty good for being powered by head unit

How much money do you want to spend? Do you want separates or coax? Most decent speakers start around $150+

Well, I still have to replace 3 front top dash 4" speakers but they have to be pretty slim in profile and center of the circle due to the speaker grill.
