Wow. Ive been thinking of running a dual boot of Ubuntu, it's suppose to be quite a bit less CPU hungry over XP/Vista. I wonder if there is a way to install Photoshop on it, it'd be nice to see the difference between the speed of it and Vista.

Been messing with Ubuntu for the last week or so. Finally getting it the way I want. Haven't had a chance to install Photoshop yet, but I did just do a Geekbench of each OS on the exact same hardware setup (dual boot).

Vista Ultimate 32bit: 3802
Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) 32bit: 4275

http://browse.geekbench.ca/user/mdoyle/profile

I do notice that Ubuntu loads quite a bit faster than Vista. But there are a few things that Vista does so much better than Ubuntu. I'm gonna give Ubuntu a fair chance, probably use it for the next few weeks and go from there.

Mike, Ubuntu to me, is hands down the best Linux distro available. I've ran it many times over its years of being around. Its always refreshing to run Ubuntu after using Windows for so many years. I'm sure you've heard of Beryl/Compiz etc. Its very cool to use just to play with. Tons of cool useful features. As for getting Photoshop to work, its possible, but its buggy (in my experience at least) and much less of a headache to just dual boot for apps that are Windows native.

Here are some old pics of my previous Ubuntu setups:

O P E N SOURCE FTW.

Yeah, this isn't my first time in Ubuntu, I ran Edgy and Feisty a bit to play around with it but always fell in trouble with Beryl/Compiz, and after they destroyed my xorg.conf file I decided to just stop messing with it. After getting the Quad, I figured i'd give it a real shot again.

I have Compiz Fusion running on this install right now, and it's setup in a way I like for right now. I know there are tons of things that you are able to do in Linux since it's all Open Source.

I do also agree that Ubuntu is the best Linux distro available right now. I played around with Fedora, CentOS, Debian and Gentoo a bit, but Ubuntu seems to be more user friendly.

How do you like Mac OSX compared to Ubuntu? Maybe i'll go for a tri-boot, and give it a shot too.

If you're at 3.6ghz why is my lil AMD benchmarking higher? I'm only @ 3.0ghz. I'm not a computer whiz by any means, but that's crazy. You got over half a ghz on me.

Its all about the IPC's, Instructions Per Clock. Intels were and are the first to get really high processors speeds, but they did less instructions compared to AMD's chips. Basically, AMD's get more work done with a slower processing speed because they were more efficient. The pre Core 2 Duo cpu's took more processing power to get more work done. With the Intel Core 2 Duo's, its more similar to AMD's technology... just a shitload better. More IPC's, MUCH better multi-processing, just overall better technology. My 2.0Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo destroys my old Intel Pentium D 3.0@3.6Ghz setup by a long shot.

DJ NeX
08-26-2007, 01:22 PM
I was thinking about about switchin' over to the Intel Quad, but I don't see a reason to spend a G on a processor. I'm gonna wait til AMD comes out with their quad core series and when the second price drop on the Procs come around, MAYBE I'll think about upgrading, but this system gets the job done well enough for me.

Mike
08-26-2007, 08:41 PM
A Grand? You're nuts. I just spent $300 on a Quad, with a new Intel mother board at $120 from Fry's (mark up much?). Don't know why you think a Quad would cost you that much.

Mike
08-26-2007, 09:18 PM
Well, if you aren't "much of a computer whiz" and your current system already "gets the job done", then why do you need a top of the line Quad processor? Seems like overkill to me.
