check the coolant temp sending unit first...it's going to vary resistance depending on the temp. so pull it out and put a DVOM on it, then check resistance, then put it in cold or hot water and check it agin. see if it changes. if it doesn't, it's bad. Here's the catch. If it DOES, that doesn't ALWAYS mean that it's good...but it's somewhere to start at least.

The sensor on the side of the head tends to go out quite often.

ya, defintely sounds like a bad sensor
they should be cheapp
