hey guys i need some advice. ive been shopping around for a camera for a bit, but im not sure exactly what to get. ive seen alot of professionally shot photos taken on here and i was curious to know what brand/type of cameras some of you are using and how much they typically run for. im not looking forward to to giving an arm and a leg for a new camera, nor am i looking for anything professional you know. just something to get me by and take some nice pictures. so if you all could help me out a little it would be appreciated. thanks

Canon EOS 350D / Rebel XT - ~$350(body only) - $750(new from Best Buy with a lens and all the accessories)

I paid ~ $575 for the full kit but I got it at one of those electronics shops in Manhattan when I was there on Xmas Vacate a year or so ago.

I'd say the Cannon 350 and Nikon D50 are both excellent cameras for beginners like me, they're in the same price range, and they also have alot of features and can help you get the basics down pretty easily. I wouldn't get anything more expensive than that if you're a beginer.

I've had it for over a year now and I'm still trying to get the hang of it, especially with night shots.

It took me a couple of years to make good use of my 35mm Canon Rebel G when I got back in Highschool. If you have experience with 35mm you shouldn't have to much trouble though.

These are my favorites from it so far:

I know there's so much more I can do with the camera, I just need to find the time to mess around with it.

I'd try to search for a good deal, try googling ABE's of Maine, thats where my Dad gets alot of his electronics.

But, if you still don't want to spend that much:

Most mid- to high-end point-and-shoots are going to have auto modes for night, daylight, incandecent etc. and should do a decent job, some also alow you to adjust things like shutter speed manually as well.

Don't get caught up in pixel ratings either, higher megapixel ratings generally offer higher resoulution up to a point, I'd say for all intents and purposes 4-6 megapixels will be fine for snapshots and general photos. As far as point and shoots, I generally like Sony's and Canons.

Something like this would probably give you a decent amount of control and still be relatively affordable:

Sony Cyber Shot: $250 http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=DSCH2&Dept=cameras&CategoryName=dcc_DIDigitalCameras_style_fullfeatur ed

Canon: $310
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0602/06022111canons3is.asp

Digital SLR's generally make things easier and allow you to make the best of the current conditions rather than finding the perfect conditions to make the best of your camera.

I survived the last 5 years before getting my SLR using this beast:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/FD95/FD95A.HTM

(IT USED 3.5" FLOPPY DISKS FOR MEDIA!!!)

it had the longest optical zoom of any point and shoot, and I paid dearly for it ($700 new from Fry's back in 01'.) It did take some decent shots, and still does:

ONLY 2.1 MEGAPIXELS TOO!

Will if you buy an XT/350d, I'll sell you the battery grip. Will include a charger, and a extra battery. I upgraded to the 20D-BG.

you can get a good pic out of a 2-3 megapixel camera, a point and shoot type camera. just a matter of getting to know the features of it. peteex has the same camera as JDMSmoot, I have the older version 300D and love it. these are DSLR's and are a bit pricey but well worth it.

here are some of my pics:

http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/8376/dtca1xt7.jpg

there's a lot you can do with a dslr camera, there are some great photographers out there too that take some amazing pics, just depends on the model of the camera, and most importantly the skill of the photographer.

another big thing is post processing. That's what adds the 'personal' touch in my opinion.

True. If I didn't have photoshop, I wouldn't even bother taking pics, lol.

I personally LOVE my Canon Elan 7, but it's a 35mm, so I don't know how much you'll dig that. I have yet to get into the digi revolution. I KNOW I KNOW, I need to get with the times, film's going extinct, that's old skool, etc...I've heard it all. It's just that I've been shooting on 35mm SLR's for almost 10 years now and I CAN'T QUIT!!!! But if you're looking to that area, Canon makes a Elan 7D which is my same camera but digi, but make sure you lube your butt first, because you'l DEFINATELY take it there on the price!!!!

chris dude if you have any questions about any camera shit hit me up... either call me or pm me i'll help you out bro. personally i shoot with a nikon d70 and a 35-70 2.8d lens. it's good for portraiture but if you're looking to take car shots you'd need somethin wider. but fo sho man hit me up with any questions. i also worked for ritz for 2 years so i can still get the hookup :D.

Why where you told to stay away from the sony cybershots? I've never had a problem with either of my Sonys?

One of them is 6 years old and the other is 8. They're both Mavicas, is there something about the cybershots that makes them unreliable?

Aside from the random cleaning of the floppy drives in them, they've been plugging away nonstop. Even the batteries, which are as old as the cameras, haven't needed replacement.

i was just told the cybershots dont really perform well in low light areas. im not sure if this is true and i hope its not because i really like them. do u know if the point and shoot cybershots are compatible with extra lenses and what not? and as for derability ive never heard of anything going bad with sony's products. thats why i was really interested in buying one.

Most point and shoots are not going to have interchangable lenses. You might be able to get a fish-eye or wide angel adaptor for the end of the lens barrell, but I'm not aware of any non SLR bodied cameras that you can change out the whole lens on.

no just fish-eye and wide angle adapters like Peteex mentioned.

I don't even think that one would alow for those, there's no threads on the barrel.

Like was said earlier, you can get good shots off a point and shoot, but judging by the type of shots you say you want to acheive you're going to need to bite the bullet and spend the extra money for something decent.

ive looked around and everythings real expensive for my budget right now. i think ill just get a nice point and shoot for now, and maybe get an slr of some sort in the future. now the question is which one should i get.
