HID Headlights?

ok i wanna do this to my car soon but i wouldn't know where to get a quality set. I dont really trust ebay when it comes to stuff like this. Also what is the LEGAL brightness i can go? I was thinking 12000k or 10000k

Brightness is not measured like that. The numbers you posted, refer to color temperature. If you want to stay stock looking get 4300k. Most of us run 7 and 8k.

yeah i just read a FAQ on these and now i know. here's the thing. i was thinkin of running either with purple or dark blue lights but i dont want any trouble from the cops. what temp could could i run that was around that color(temp) that wouldn't draw TOO much attention?

I would say a 7000k or 8000k at the most for a nice white/Blue hue to it. Purple tends to not ne as bright and too blue {around 9-10k} may get yuou pulled over for impersonating an officer. It happens, think someone even got popped for it on this board. Mobile HID has some really nice HID kits and Clif is more than helpful. LMK if I can help anymore. I stock his HID kist btw, I'll vouche.

I had a set of 4300K's, some one else has them now. None of these kits are legal. So regardlles of what color temp you're running they will never actually be legal. Even if you do the ever popular projector retrofit they still haven't been tested by SAE in anything but whatever car they came from that had them as OEM equipment so they ares still as illegal as my next door neighbors when I used to live in Mesa.

I suggest 4300-6000K but nothing over. IMO after that they look kind of silly, and at that point you might as well just by colored bulbs.

HID's still put out more lumens than halogens regardless of color temp, but the usable spectrum (read: not neccesarily the visble spectrum) decreases dramatically especially in the rain.

And yes, I bought mine because I like the look, and it was something I wanted to do, but I wasn't going to sacrifice to much.

anything above 10k is pretty fucking retarded. you lose a good amount of visibility.

you will stand out that's for sure, but it looks gay.

Like I said, mine are out of a QX56, and they are perfectly legal, they are whitish blue. And no, they are not stolen, got them from a completely totalled out Infiniti. The best thing is that they are super reliable because they are OEM HID's, these are $1500 from the Infiniti dealer. I have a total of 3 sets, one of which is installed in my 98 EK as pictured.

Damit, you beat me to it.

Putting HID's in any car that did not come with factory HID's , or putting HID's in Non-HID specific housings is completely ILLEGAL.

Example.

Conventional headlamp 01' 325i with HID retro = ILLEGAL

Conventional headlamp 01' 325i with complete headlamp assembly bulb ballast, projector lens and un-modified lamp housing from HID equipped 325i = legal

It wouldn't matter if you took the entire headlamp assembly off a QX56 and mounted it unmodified on the civic, since its no longer on a QX56, its completely illegal.

Has to do with mirrors in the lamp that focus the brightness onto the road and do not produce extreme glare to oncoming traffic. Your Honda headlamps weren't designed to control this kind of output.
