After living on Oahu for a while, when I visited Maui a few months ago, I was honestly pretty dissappointed. It didn't make me want to stay, like when I go back and visit Punalu'u. Anyone else seen this from island to island? Don't get me wrong, I love the islands, and I miss them so bad it makes me sick, but it just seemed like I couldn't get away from the commercialism and tourism if I tried. I know Oahu can be just as bad in places, but at least where I lived was pretty local, and we could head north and it just kept getting better. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. I'm rambling now...

i lived in hawaii for 18 years (born/raised) then moved here to go to college. i have only been back twice in four years for a total about about three weeks. i love hawaii, that is a big part of who i am, but everytime i go back i feel like i dont belong. i have become something differnt, i am that mainlander that i used to hate. i am that person that comes to hawaii just for vacation, i used to hate people that would come to my side of the island, get drunk, and do stupid shit....and what do you know, when i went back i was drunk everyday and doing stupid shit...

i went to kamehemeha for gods sake, i mean i understand hawaii, my sister teachers hawaiian emmersion and her boyfreind is in some band that just won a na-hoku, i mean i get what hawaii is about, but when i go back i feel so disconnected. i feel like i shouldnt have left, and now that i turned by back on the islands its done the same to me. i mean i dont even know if i could ever live there again, i have become so acustomed to this lifestyle, its ideologies, and its practices.

it really does scare me that i have become this person that is now a tourist in my own home. i mean since i left i am more hawaiian that i ever was, i got a hawaii lic. plate on my dash, i wear prototype, lightsleepers, bloodline, and all other hawaii shit just to re-affim my hawaiianess...its weird. i go to aloha kitchen, l&l, mai island grill, and sushi and always tell people its better in hawaii...idk...

Holy hell! I couldn't have said it better myself! When we went to Maui (my girl and I), I remember driving around and seeing fucking pasty white haoles everywhere and just getting pissed and a feeling of completely despising these people, for who they are, and for what they're doing to "my islands". Then, I swear to God this happened, I saw our reflection in a store window as we were walking up, and it hit me; THAT'S US. Not a native, not a Hawaiian by blood, just another stupid haole coming down here and bringing the year 2007 to my island. It honestly depressed the shit out of me. I've never felt so much like I was intruding on someone else's turf...

But here's the thing. I don't even think that's what bothered me about Maui so badly. What was so much of a bummer to me was not the vast amount of haoles and vacation resorts, it was the fact that when I DID run into a local, or a legit native, they just looked...depressed. Like, down-trodden, broken-spirited people. Like they thought they had finally lost this "fight" with whitey, and that whitey had won. It made me want to get the fuck out of there and stop contributing to the problem AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. For anyone who has ever been to one of our Native American Indian reservations KNOWS the "look" I'm talking about. It was one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed.

I don't know. Maybe I missed something. Maybe it's different up country, like more towards Haleakela. I was told by some buddies back on Oahu that up country is the place to be for locals, but I hadn't gotten that far by the time I had this realization, so I couldn't even bring myself to go up there after that. I felt like, from what Sole told me, that up country was one of the VERY few places that the locals still had to themselves, and I wasn't about to go and try to take that away from them, or intrude on that, no matter how long I had lived in the islands during another time of my life. I hate that.

I HATE seeing a culture ruined, or at least tainted, by pop culture. I'm not even Hawaiian and I can't stand watching it. Sure, I lived there for a while. And yes, I was, for all intents and purposes, a "local", and hung with the locals, and lived the north shore life, because that's what I went there for. But I'm not Hawaiian, and yet, when I see Hawaiian culture being exploited, I want to stab people in the face. Shit, I'm fucking Irish, for shit's sake! But it's the same fucking story there. I'm Irish. My family came here from Boston, and then from Kilburn (a small village in Ireland) before that. My grandparents lived in fucking slums in Southie and worked in factories or on the docks. THAT'S who I am. Growing up, that was not a popular way to be. But I still 'repped" it, because that's my heritage. Cutting fish in a packing plant is not a glorious heritage. It's not something to be proud of. But all of a sudden, in the past few years, being "Irish" is the "in" thing, and it makes me sick. Everyone wants to be Irish, as if it's a glorious thing, and I don't get why. What changed? "Boondock Saints"? "The Departed"? "Suicide Kings"? The Sox finally win the Series, and suddenly those "fucking dirty potato eating shit-heaps" (what my gramps used to call people from "the old country") are what people want to be? Are you kidding me? And there it went. Another decent culture, fucked up by popular culture. It makes me sick. Good Lord this post is long. I better stop now. Sorry. And thank you, to anyone who read this far!
