Hey Ive got a b18a in a crx and Im at 2.01, but need to be at 1.60 on the hydrocarbons test. What is causing this and what can I do to at least pass emissions for now? Had to spend another $28 just for the test. PLEASE HELP?

Chances are the cat is bad, is it aftermarket or oem on the vehicle? Do you have a chipped ecu? Could be a couple things going on.

^^^true story^^^ hydrocarbons is unburnt fuel. that can be from a rich mixture, an incomplete burn (more so than usual), or from a bad cat. (there are other possibilities, but might as well go for the easy ones first ya?) most motors don't burn every last bit of fuel that they swallow, which translates into raw fuel in the exhaust. a catalytic converter is designed to, basically, get hot as fuck so that when the unburned fuel that's in the exhaust flows through the cat, it hit's an atmosphere that is SO hot that it burns off what ever burnable fuel is left there, thus reducing the amount of raw fuel exiting the tail pipe and destroying our atmosphere. so i would look into that first then go from there. Anyone on here, feel free to correct that explaination if needs be. I have been known to be wrong before. Hope that helps.

well i know its running rich because it will backfire a bit when i ease down the throttle from high rpm

Best recommendations I can say will be a new/good cat, make sure your running 87 oct., fresh air filter and plugs, correct ignition timing, make sure you have good engine grounds, make sure the engine is at operating temp. Make sure your fuel pressure is at spec and not to high. More then likely you will need a good cat. Is the engine stock like stock cams, last resort will be a fuel controller to lean it out or run with one injector unpluged. I run a factory 98 accord cat on mine just to run through emssions. Lots of the aftermarket cats dont obsorb h/c's as well as factory. Good luck to you.

thanks for the info! I'm doing new plugs, checked/corrected the ignition timing, cleaned air filter, Going to put on a fuel pressure regulator to try to lean it out just a bit. The engine is a stock b18.

What is the deal with running 87 octane? I always run 91 in it. Is there something to be gained on the emissions test by running 87?

87 oct will be more likely to burn completly due to its lower fuel ignition flash point. Which is one reason why its likely to ping or detenate while driving with 87 oct. I say to run 87 just for emissions as an added precaution to lower h/c's.
