View Full Version : How soon can VTEC properly engage?

I had a 1990 Integra with a j.d.m. o.b.d. 0 B16A. I had a Spoon VTEC controller.

I swear once my B16A warmed up I could turn the VTEC engagement point to about 4,000 and I could feel it engaging. Below 4,000 r.p.m. it did not engage.

Was I mistaken?

Please do not post opinions, only FACTS.

Y would you want it to engage early? Properly tuned vtec engagement should be a very smooth hardly noticiable transition on stock cams

VTEC has never been hardly noticeable in any Honda I've driven or ridden in. VTEC is very noticeable in an S2000. Go back to school.:)

You can do whatever you want

With Toda Vtec killer cams you are in "vtec" the whole time, even though it pretty much deletes vtec

LOL...

Okay, how about a real post. I had a VTEC controller on my GSR way back in the day (like 1997) and I could engage it at any RPM I wanted. Below 4000RPM it sucked though as expected since it was a most stock motor. I think the newer VTEC controllers now a days are a little better and probably have safety features like making sure the engine is warmed up, etc. I doubt your VTEC controller is smart enough to know what oil pressure your pump is making but my only guess is there's not enough oil pressure at 4K rpm to engage the silenoid. Most Honda oil pumps make full oil pressure (70-80psi) before 4K and VTEC only needs around 55'ish psi to engage. Maybe a worn oil pump from a previous spun bearing or debris ran through the pump gear???

As far as "feeling" VTEC, it is an untrue statement to say that all Honda VTEC engines you can feel it. Many of the SOHC VTEC motors you can't feel and you can barely hear. The GSR is another one that you can barely hear engaging at 4400rpm. You can feel and hear the dual runners open up past 6000rpm though. Many of my motor builds as well have been tuned so you don't feel the VTEC kick in which is what you want. If you can "feel" VTEC then it's set too high. If you set it too low you're missing out on midrange power.

I can't imagine a B16 making more power in VTEC at 4K rpm (I'd guess you'll loose power switching over that early) so this might be a mute point regardless.

I was selling a brand new antenna rod for half the price I paid. I was sharing my passion for da Integras.

Meanwhile you and your:kiss: boyfriend were sharing a horchata.

So what? I trusted D.V.I. to do many repairs on both my Integras.

I've bought a transmission, Skunk2 short shifter, and had an engine built there.
What the F8ck have you had done there, broke ass?

in my opinion vtec is all about timing with your motor . two people can have the exact same cars same weight and everything but say #1 car put his vtec below 4 and car #2 puts it at 4 or above most likely car number 2 will when. see where your vtec works best on YOUR motor

Advert I was not knocking him because he might work on his own car. I don't care what he does with his life. He started talking shit on my thread.
I do some work on my own cars, and some things I would rather pay someone with experience to do properly and quickly.
It boils down to whether I have the time or confidence to perform certain repairs or modifications.
Also quit with the B.S. Your wheels aren't more than my old Integra.
