Last week was a madhouse trying to get the Civic drag car back together for "Pinks All Out". The car was basically slapped back together with only minor changes done from last year's set-up. We removed the lexan windshield for a stock glass piece... it is 14lbs. heavier, but the aerodynamic advantages should help offset the weight. The transmission was modified adding a 5.15 final drive as well as 26" slicks. Josh spent about 25 Hours inside the car rewiring everything. In the wiring harness alone, he was able to save 8 lbs. of weight. Doesn't sound like it was worth the effort, but every trick needs to be taken advantage of when running in the "All Motor" classes. Ceramic wheel bearing were added up front as well as drive shaft shop stage 5.9 axles. The rear remained the same, except that the lower control arms were swapped back to stocks, since I sold the lighter ones... oops.
On Sunday, I was able to sneak into the UTI homecoming event at speedworld just to make a few passes.
Our goal was to make sure the car went straight, brakes worked, and nothing broke. The first few passes had the car running horribly lean in the upper RPMs so it spit and belched above 6K rpm. The passes weren't that good, but the car went straight and that was important since we didn't get to the alignment shop like originally planned.
I made a couple of fuel adjustments and the car started to clean up in the upper RPMs, but I was wheelspinning really bad off the line. the fastest pass at that time was 12.6 @ 109 with a 1.75 60ft time. I have consistently run 1.5 60ft times on the earlier 24.5" slicks, but on the 26" all I could do was a 1.75. Part of the problem was that I arrived at the track missing some basic tools... like a tire pressure gauge. DUH! We set the tires to what we thought was 12psi. But most likely this was way too high, but I was more concerned with other bugs that had popped up. My traction bar gave me a problem, then I noticed that the brakes were hanging up. After fixing the traction bar, I found that the brakes would be OK if I held the pedal up with my foot. Trying to do a burn out, stage and not roll forward was a real trick while playing with the damn pedal. besides all the issues, I still am plagued with a clutch issue that wont let me launch over 5K RPM as well as not dissengaging during shifts. I had to concentrate on my 1-2 shift being low in the RPMs or I would miss the gear.
All that being said, I got one semi clean pass out of the weekend. We have a tone of work to do to make this car competitive. Right now it isn't, but it sure is faster now than it would be sitting in police impound, so things are looking up.
Here is the pass:
