View Full Version : Interior Color Change

Well today I offically started to change the interior color over. I didn't do the same method that was done on civicforums. I actually was planning on doing it, but decided what the hell and to do a test try with some duplicolor viynal and plastic spray i found at autozone. I did a test piece with a panel located in the area where the pull down seats are located and it turned out better than expected. With that said I started pulling out interior pieces and starting little by little to get the interior changed over. I will post some pic's as I progress through the project. It's going to be a while before it's all done, but it's all steps in the right direction and hopefully in the process i'll get a chance to learn more about my car and it's interior setup.

I am changing the Interior color from the ivory to black. I can't stand looking at it the way it is anymore and it's been driving me nuts since I bought the car. It's time for a change finally. I really didn't get much done today, just like 3-4 pieces. Tommarrow I will be picking more paint up and starting more aggressively.

crazy man. you gonna dye the carpet?

MrRline2010
04-20-2008, 10:04 PM
Thinking about it. Either dye it or pull some from an em2 in a junkyard if I can. depends

sniperscout
04-20-2008, 10:12 PM
so is it dye or paint?

MrRline2010
04-20-2008, 10:16 PM
paint

sniperscout
04-20-2008, 10:19 PM
the civic carpet is actually on sale right now $109
http://www.stockinteriors.com

so this stuff can scratch off then

MrRline2010
04-20-2008, 10:37 PM
when i have more money ill give it a shot. Also it seems pretty durable I've opened and shut the door a few times to simulate some wear and it seems to be holding up. At this point I kindda don't even care it's a quick fix to keep me happy till i gut it.

what are your ideas for it?

INTEGRA DC2
04-21-2008, 11:43 AM
just a fyi that paint is not a permanent thing i did the exact same thing and after a while it started to peel off in little pieces and when the dash gets scratched it really stands out, and yes i did prep the surface enough too, i say just get the interior out of a different car, will be much better

MrRline2010
04-21-2008, 03:18 PM
well I finished up the can today got quite a bit done. I'll post pic's up in a bit. I did about 3 coats on the parts that I put in. If I notice any problems with chipping or peeling or anything then ill go from there. I think this stuff is more like a dye though because of the fact that you can use it for carpets and so on. If it was paint it wouldn't work right on carpeting would it?

Btw rufus i'm not looking forward to the dash at all lol. I think for the dash i'm going to have to plastic the whole car and spray from there. Tape the front windshield and so on.

MrRline2010
04-21-2008, 04:40 PM
car is kindda dirty right now, but the black looks good so far. I'm going to watch and see if I get any weird flaking or anything like that in the next couple weeks, and i'll go from there to finish up the interior.

I was deciding wether or not I wanted to wrap them. they came out really good in the diy for interior change on civic forums, but i'm not totally sure yet. Thanks for the idea though. Also picking up a couple cans of Sem color coat next weekend to try and do more. Should be the same color as what I put on now and if it's different ill sand and respray what i've done so far. this should change the color all around since it's dye based, but to be honest i'm happy with the progress so far. Soon the em2 won't have that shit tan colored everything.

Thanks. Picking up the sem color coat from mrlowdunk this week in gdale. That will be used for the dash since I have a more predictable idea of how the application process will turn out. I just don't want to chance the dash since it's a huge piece.

Can't back out now skank!

Ha yea, but this is something i've wanted to do since the first day I got the car. I've just gotten to the point now where I can't stand the look of it anymore and it's gotta go. Black out interior here I come :d I'm really surprised I haven't gotten any flamming in this thread yet.

sniperscout
04-21-2008, 11:57 PM
black interior is for ricers....

ah who am i fooling...my entire car is black inside out

looks like you are doing a great job. I think you should leave the pieces you have black for a few weeks and wait to paint the rest. If they do start to do funky stuff it would be cheaper to replace or fix. It is good you started with the pieces that take the most wear.

did you ever actually price out how much it would cost for all new of the oem black interior pieces? i wouldnt think it would be that much except for the dash

i have purchased a few trim pieces and they were reasonably priced

MrRline2010
04-22-2008, 12:09 AM
I priced out a few places around 500 bucks or more not including seats or anything like that. Not worth it in my opinion. This shouldn't be that expensive and will give me the look I desire and should handle the heat and so on. I'm actually pretty impressed with this duplicolor spray, but at this point for the dash and larger pieces i'm picking up some sem color coat. It's supposed to be more like a dye which should give me more durability.

sniperscout
04-22-2008, 12:13 AM
i would still wait...especially before doing the dash....yeah heat can work a number on paints.

hows the car smell?

just remember take your time and a lot of little coats is better than one thick coat

i wouldnt paint the dash in the car...it would be hard to get into the crevices without causing runs in the paint

MrRline2010
04-22-2008, 07:17 AM
No smells and I know that's why i've been doing coat after coat on parts before I put them back in. Gotta do the dash man can't stand it.

Eh well see how I tackle it in the end. I'm leaning on doing more like the diy in civicforums. Take off as much as I can and do it outside and do the rest inside while the car is masked off.

Saw it this morning, looks good, will try and find the ep3 seats you want finish it off.

Thanks man hopefully by the next time you see my car again more will be done. We'll have to see. Glad to know it's running good though.

I'm hoping I will have enough to do them properly. I can't seem to find places that carry quarts of the stuff so this will do. I will post pic's when I have time.

I messed up slightly, but considering I didn't have anything to mask it off and did most of it by hand it didn't turn out too bad. The tan part was already a bit dirty. Later I plan on changing the color and material. Anyway here is the pics. Not too shabby if I don't say so myself

doh it's late and I don't want to go down stairs. How's tommarrow sound? I might work on it some more tommarrow anyway. I finish my other door panel now. I'm working on the rear atm. I think the dash is going to be the last thing i'm going to do. I am running into a problem though with the center console removal. It almost looks like it seperates, but I personally don't see how that would be done, nor do I see how it comes out without tearing out a bunch of shit.
