harbor frieght has a nice sand blast kit thats cheap if you create a catching system under car that goes back into sand bucket cost effective and paint gone in now time --- p.s. cover eyes and arms

If I were doing it, I'd take everything out that I could from the engine bay first, including taking off the hood. Degrease it a few times with simple green or one of the citris based cleaners - not gunk or something like that that is solvent based.

After I had it degreased, I'd take a bucket of soapy warm water and a scotchbrite pad, probably a red one, and start going over the entire painted surfaces under the hood. Where you have scratches in the paint, blend them out with 400 grit wet or dry paper.

Tape up everything you don't want painted with masking tape. Use the blue stuff - it is a lot easier to remove. Don't use newspaper to tape off areas - it can bleed through if saturated with paint. Go buy the paper at a paint store. Mask off the exterior of the car with plastic sheet - if you don't you will have overspray and more problems than when you started.

If the bay is going to be white, I would consider using a base clearcoat to keep the paint from yellowing over time, but if it were any other color I'd shoot it with a catalyzed acrylic enamel matched to your exterior (match it to your gascap or something removable) A Harbor Freight gun will work bueno.

I have seen people use that spray on truck liner bedding for the heat resistance and then they painted that

If you are going to do something like that, there is a rock guard paint that is made specifcally for rocker panels that you can paint over.

I suppose you could paint over bedliner, but that stuff is thick and you will be chasing tapped holes forever unless you find a way to mask them off
