I just bought most of my components for a car pc today. I am excited to start the build. I am going to be going with air cooled for now...but if it doesn't cut it with the az heat ill try out liquid cooled. I will add more stuff when I buy it. I should be purchasing the power supply tomorrow...which is actually the most expensive part of the build coming in at $200.
the components purchased so far are as follows:
pre molded 7"Lilliput touch screen...and the buttons light up blue to match the rest of my dash!

the i7 is a great series...but no i definitely should not have gone with an i7. For one it runs at twice the temperature in which the e8400 runs(and some may argue that it runs too hot for a car pc). Also it is ridiculously priced. and then the motherboards to support them are even more ridiculous. I would then be forced to use ddr3 ram and that also is more expensive. All in all the i7 series would cost way more than it is worth and may not even work because of how hot it runs.

True, practicality wise it isn't something you need, now uber l337ness wise. It's buttsex. As for the cooling issue i'm sure if you needed to you could of ran something through the ac ducting to cool the processor and board. The ddr3 ram would have been equally as nice. My buddy has an i7 he's building 25 gig's of ram it's fucking sick.

i ended up changing my hardware selection a little bit. The company i ordered the board and processor from were out of the board so I picked up a slightly larger board that has a pci slot on it for my wifi. I also downgraded to an Intel E7300 processor and picked up a 160gb barricuda HD which is 7200 RPM.
But to answer your question on the green power one is that it has a variable speed depending on how much of a load it is under. either 5400 or 7200 rpm

How long do you think that HDD is gonna last? Might want to look into SSD, they have come way down in price. Sweet little project, cant wait to see the finished pics. Oh, and where did you plan to mount it (sorry if i missed it), that heatsink has narrowed down the locations :)
sniperscout
02-16-2009, 03:10 AM
I don't want an ssd because of the limited write handicap. Yes it would be ideal...they are faster, generate less heat, and consume less power. The HDD should last long enough. I have talked to many people that have had the same HDD for years in their carputer.
The carputer will be integrated into my rear seat delete.
I started the case tonight. should be all finished tomorrow. I will post up pics then.

That's cool but your footprint needs to be smaller. Can't take that thing anywhere or thieves are gonna snatch it. I did mine a few years ago and managed to fit it all up under the dash, Of course this is when touch screen weren't readily available. So I had a huge monitor in my car and boy did that look stupid.
But nonetheless that is a great idea. Only thing I hated was boot up times, and making small trips around town. Finally I switched to a Debian Distro and it was all good from there on out, less than ten seconds to boot.
Great job overall though.
