i have a project bb2 and been mostly doin motor work and stuff. now its time to get some of the body done. when i bought the car it had this messed up body kit and looked like crap. so i recently bought some used parts such as fenders, front bumper, rear bumper, they were all different colors. i did the rear bumper myself just usin some krylon spray bottle but i want to redo the whole car. i want a matte white look with no glare. if ya can give any ideas to get this done the cheapest way, but not look cheap. and i dont really feel like tryin to redo the whole car on some spray cans. any input is welcome thanks.

I'm doing a cheapo job on my EG right now. I bought a spray gun kit from Home Depot for $80, a used air compressor for $50 ( a Harbor Freight brand that sells new for about $100 - 2 HP with 8 gallon tank), and Rustoleum red paint. The trick is to thin the paint with a 50/50 mix with Mineral Spirits, then lay down several light coats, letting each coat dry for a few days and wet sand before the next layer.

I've tried the rattle can thing and it looked terrible. This is turning out much better, at least as good as the typical Maaco job.

Just be ready to have your car tied up for a while. It would suck to have to remove all the masking, then reapply it every few days to spray the next layer.

This is the troof. I did this with my first project/DD when I was 16...

that's why it is still in primer to this day;)

ummm.....dont use a rattle can to paint your car first off....it'll look like shit

second, its not hard to paint your own car, i've painted mine three times, you just need patience.

if your looking for a flat finish, but flat paint. or buy a single stage acrylic enamel and thin it out with reducer, that kills the glossy finish and leaves it with the finish that your looking for.

I need to see your car first, but i typically charge 300 plus paint for the whole car, that price is with no body work and no door jams, those are extra because its a bitch to do usually.

oh and i can get the paint for cheap as well so let me know

since ur an expert on paint job, i want to repaint my my side moldings and side skirts cuz there faded would i still have to light sand it primer it then paint then coat it or wats the simplest way

i personally dont wet sand unless im gonna do a mirror finish with several coats of clear coat.

i'd sand it with 250 then spray bull dog(an adhesive) then paint, i wouldnt waste my time primering. primers main purpose is to show you the flaws of the body before for paint. so dont primer unless you did some repairs to the moldings and skirts.

dont use primer??? are you joking dude? not bashing you but i have painted a few car and its 10 times easyer to primer the whole car before painting it,

#1 reason is because when the whole car is one solid color you dont have to keep spraying coat after coat to cover all the colors your car might be, been there done that, its just wayyyyy easyer to primer then paint and you will save almost half the paint.

the bull dog adhesive that comes in a rattle can is ment to spray on things that are pollyurathane "sp" because paint cracks and chips easy off stock bumpers, not ment to spary a whole car with, you will end up with a funny looking paint job. can you post some of your car work?

yeah sounds kinda wack to me too, if you are going to do something do it right......or face doing it twice.....
Ive been painting long enough to know that is a big no no, whether there is bodywork undernieth or not. 300 bucks.........you get what you pay for.
I would also like to see some of your work using this process, if you dont mind.

If you know how to mix the paint right, you dont need to shoot a shit load of coats. and#2 you can use bull dog for more then just polyurethane, any plastics or metal. And if your confident in your ability to spray you really dont need to primer, like i said before, its just to see if there are and small dings and deep scratches in the paint, which most people already know about. And if your having trouble coating the old paint, dont thin it out as much..i.e use more paint and less reducer, i personally have never had any problems cover old paint on other cars. I've been helping my uncle paint for the last 12 years and been doing it on my own for 2. granted the only car i painted on my own is my own car, but i have helped out with plenty others, and the only time i have ever seen him have trouble covering one time and that was because he was doing a 50/50 blend of paint and reducer, instead he switched to 80/20 blend and boom , problem sovled. here is my car that i painted.

most recent, i had to re-paint the back bumper due to hitting a pole

I have rattle canned valve covers that look better than a new car's paint job.

2 layers of primer
wetsand with 1000 grit
2-3 layers of paint
wetsand with 1000 grit
2-3 layers of clear
wetsand with 1000 grit
then use a buffer and a wax solution (i forgot what kind, body shops use it though)

You use rattle can clear after using a gun for the color? Is that what you did on all the cars in the pics? Was the color single stage paint ? I just finished painting my car with Rustoleum. I used a gun, not the roll-on way. I'm pretty satisfied with the way it came out, but I thought some clear would give the paint a little more "depth".

If that's what you did on those cars you posted, I'll definitely give it a try.

no i use rattle can clear over rattle can color. All the cars ive done are standard bc/cc. Clear does usually help with the depth of the paint job though.

I just finished painting my hatch. It's my first try at painting a car. I'm pretty happy with it. Overall, it is at least a Maaco quality job for less than $100. It still needs to be wet-sanded, polished, and waxed. I laid down 5 coats so I should be able to do plenty of polishing if necessary. We'll see how it looks after all that. Here's how it looks now:

I've done a full rattlecan paint job, but that's 'cause we didn't give a shit what the car looked like afterward.

I think it was two or three cans of black, one of primer and one of clearcoat. Came to less than $20. Ultrabudget if you don't give a crap.

The body was borked anyway, so we didn't care.

Hey guys. I promise i read through this all so I'm not just posting.

Are you guys using your own booths or gargdes? I saw one person looked like they did it in their garage but that's it.

Also, would it be easier/cheaper for me to do it myself or to have one of you guys do it? I got quoted 750 for a full paint job but reading what you guys have said it looks like that price could come down a bit (a lot)

I'm really interested in getting my car painted and i only have 3-4 small dings and one pop out dent in my hood.

Just take your time. This full color change cost me about 350 in PPG paints / Primer / Clear

Had help from azhters sanding and mixing. Total time was 1 week from start to finish (and we literally finished the car, and drove it to CA hours after letting the last pieces dry).

That came out nice. What paint gun were you using.

a harbor freight one and sometimes an ingersoll rand one. its more on how u set it up than the gun itself i've noticed.

dude just go to a paint supply store. all paint isn't that expensive. PPG is, and no ones gonna sell you a few extra quarts for that cheap lol.

Just go get a few yourself and get some cheaper paint. It lays like crap but you coudl sand the hell outta the clear :)

You can get 2 gallons of integrated clear coat paint for around 100 bucks if you play your cards right. And you get to pick the color!

or just have maaco do it for a couple hundred and be done with it!

I can't wait. I'm going to start sanding mine down and preping. How hard do you think the inside would be to paint.

Being one of those assisting Ravi with his RX7, I can say the inside is harly any different. Just have to plan your attack so you dont accidently touch what you just sprayed.

We removed every little stinking bolt and clip and had to replace it all when finished which was absolutely time consuming but very much so worth it.

Once the inside areas were complete, we just masked them off as not to get more overspray in there.

If you dont know how to do it and dont want to pay someone to do it right, fuckit just have maaco do it. They dont care either BUT you dont have to get your own hands dirty LOL

You get what you pay for. Whether when paying someone else to do it, or with what quality paint you purchase to do it yourself!
