BDD 07-31-2011 09:14 AM

nice! Did you have to prehet the housing?

honduh_head 07-31-2011 03:38 PM

I shall not give away my secrets.

BDD 08-01-2011 07:32 AM

lol okay? cuz welding is such a big seceret! Sorry I'm just a self taught noob that isnt good enough for your guys........

T04rPowered - That stainless is looking great! Oh, and there aren't any secrets to welding cast stuff. A preheat is not as important as the very slow controlled cool down for something small like a turbine housing. Grind the weld area so you have fresh clean metal to weld to, supermissle rod, throw a turbo blanket on it after or wrap it in a ton of foil, box it up, let cool down. Something like a housing should take about 2-3 hours to cool.

Bomb beads Hector! One question, what makes the weld look so different on the first picture with the flange weld? Ive always wondered how to get a really flat bead like that. Is that foot pulsed? I notice the cleaning in between the dips.

honduh_head 08-01-2011 10:18 AM

me too for the most part. i've had some good tips here and there from coworkers.

and like vince said, preheat isn't that big of deal. I started with the inside weld first, because that part was machined and easier to heat soak. once it was done, the rest of the housing was heat soaked so it was easy to weld.

Nope not foot pulsed. One thing is using a transformer machine vs an inverter machine. Another big thing is heat, on the first pic the flange is 3/8" thick welded to .090" thick aluminum. On thin aluminum try putting a block of aluminum or cooper or steel to soak some of the heat, so you will be using more heat but will also penetrate more giving you a flatter weld. hope that helps.
Im so use to these miller dialarc machines that when i use a newer inverter i realize how much different they weld. i hate the :guns: newer machines now for welding aluminum lol
