Building a cage in my Rex
 
I need some input on doing the front part of my cage , I have looked all over online for ideas but the best ones I found require floor to be cut out and tubed to the front bumper with an engine cage.
So what I want to know is what could I do to keep the shell together with out chopping floor or roof and cage the front! Need some ideas

I also want to know would it be an over kill to put an x on the 2 bars on the rear?

What are you building the cage for? Road Racing? Or Drag Racing?


FYI: this is not a legal layout for NASA road racing



The rear support legs for the main hoop need to be welded to the chassis, not the rear strut tower brace like you are showing. Most builders use the pocket right in front of the rear strut towers.

I wanted to build it for drag and road racing but what if I moved the legs closer to the towers and knoched them to hug the plate I made and weld it to the car it's 1 and 3/4 120 wall should be strong enough

As long as they are relying on that cross bar as the attachment point, it's not going to pass for race group. You can run HPDE, but it won't pass race tech.

Is the tubing seamless alloy (4130), seamless mild steel, DOM, or ERW?

Those specs on the cage material will pass based on the CRX's weight

You will want to add the front half of the cage to the main hoop now, while you still have 360 degrees access to weld around the joints. The cage at this point will too short for the vehicle. You then build up a box underneath the contact points for the bottom of the main hoop to the floor, and the bottom of the front legs to the floor, that allow you to raise the cage up another 3-4 inches to achieve a nice tight fit against the roof.

You do the rear half of the cage last. Note how all the joints in the picture I posted are accessible to the fabricator after the front half of the cage is raised up via the fabricated boxes on the bottom contact points.
You'll have to saw out your rear bars to allow the main hoop to move up and down.

Keep in mind that penetrating the front firewall may exclude the car from certain classes that you may want to race in. You should read the rules thoroughly before building your cage to avoide redoing your work.

I'm not going to touch firewall an nothing is welded in but the strut tower tube I think I'm just going to shoot a door bar down and be done with it

Mr Rex you may wanna look at this pages 40-47 should give you a good guideline to a safe roll cage.
