"The" Roof Leak... :(

So I finally got it today, after all the rain we have been seeing, I finally get a small drip in the cabin. So how do I go about fixing this one? The water runs down the SAME plastic piece that is connected to the dome light. That one that is along the entire back side, it drips down to right behind the passenger seat and driver seat, causing a nasty splash on my back seat compartment boxes...

Is there weather stripping that needs to be replaced that I can't visual see?
Any info would be great.

Edit: ITS ON A DEL SOL! my bad to post this part sooner.

Civicious 07-27-2010 11:00 PM

its needed to be done about ever year

RPG2ach 07-28-2010 12:48 AM

Ugh...Where can I find this "Oil" substance...Please don't say walmart lol

MannyaK 07-28-2010 01:29 AM

lol always best to go to manufactuer
so go to honda theyll have it

RPG2ach 07-28-2010 01:30 AM

and what is it called? "Hey guys, I don't know what it's called, but I am assuming it goes by 'super devil juice'?" lol :)

MannyaK 07-28-2010 01:33 AM

RPG2ach 07-28-2010 01:52 AM

Thnx MannyaK, we will see what weather stripping this is coming from. I may go take pictures and post them up here to give you a better idea of where it drips from, because I could not find anything about it coming from that plastic piece in the cabin. More info in the morning with pictures hopefully :)

what year is your sol? In 1995 Honda released a redesigned version of the roof seals that better prevent the leaks. Here in AZ, it is absolutely necessary to lube the seals periodically with the Shin-Etsu grease you can get from Honda. If you don't you will end up like me where you have to find shelter in rain storms because the seals are useless.

If you have a 1993 like me and your seals are shot, you can find new 1995 seals for in the range of $250 or so and you install them, or Honda wants like 700-1000 to do it at the dealership. Best money you can spend on a del sol though. That reminds me, I need to put that in my sig...I need 95+ seals too lol

RPG2ach 07-28-2010 12:01 PM

Oi, I guess I better go pick that stuff up :/ and ask how I go about doing this haha

MannyaK 07-28-2010 12:03 PM

immortal knows everything about a sol
work something out with him he can probably get it done for you

RPG2ach 07-28-2010 10:23 PM

Cool, I will be sure to go to Immortal for the Del Sol related talk. In the mean time, I will have pictures of where exactly it is leaking from tomorrow afternoon :D

imm0rtal 07-29-2010 12:35 PM

it's leaking from the joints in the front of the car or where the front corner of the window meets the roof seals. So where the front roof seal meets the side ones, that is where the water is coming in. I guess the 1995+ seals had a slight change to how they mated together which fixed the leaking mostly. The best way to do it now, unless you don't mind blowing some serious cash, is to get the seals from a junkyard, a honda shop manual, and install them yourself. I'm sure it's not a hard DIY, just have to pay attention to those details

ahh ok that rear leak comes from the plastic piece that the third brake light is located on. It is common for when you remove that to break some of the little clips that hold it on, so you may have a broken clip or two. I would start there :)

RPG2ach 07-30-2010 08:34 PM

Well where can I get some replacement clips? And what needs to be done to fix it? IMMORTAL FILL ME IN :D lol

RPG2ach 08-01-2010 02:30 PM

Alrighty, so I looked up the closest thing I could find

If anyone can fill me in on exactly what I need to be looking out for, and what I need to possibly fill with silicone? Or another plastic piece, or something...anything! lol

imm0rtal 08-01-2010 09:37 PM

you can get those clips from Honda. Unfortunately, almost all OEM shit for these cars has to be bought at Honda because not a lot of people have them. These cars are for the most dedicated of the dedicated parts hunters, that's for sure lol

RPG2ach 08-02-2010 01:49 AM

Well, like that post says from that other website, should I just make my own gasket to fix this permenantly? Or just bite the bullet and buy new clips? I am asking for your honest opinion Immortal :)

92BlackEgMTX 08-02-2010 05:57 AM

i know its kinda off topic too but there is a window adjustment you can do to your corner glass that gets rid of a lot of the leak in the front seals.. i just did it and instead of flooding my car it only has an occasional drip now.. took forever to do tho. there is a write up from honda somewhere on it.

RPG2ach 08-02-2010 12:52 PM

Your right BlackEG, that was way off topic lol :D

92BlackEgMTX 08-02-2010 01:03 PM

ehh still pertains to the del sol so.. lol

imm0rtal 08-02-2010 01:06 PM

I guess it all depends on what you want, really. I prefer to fix something once and be done with it, so I usually spend a shitload of money/time either buying new parts or finding replacements in the junkyards. For those clips, you will probably have to go to honda, since they usually get broken when people remove the "sail" where the third brake light is. For the seals, I would try to find them used but in good shape because they are fucking expensive as all hell from the dealer lol

RPG2ach 08-02-2010 01:17 PM

Do you know the price off the top of your head?

imm0rtal 08-03-2010 02:47 PM

for the seals? I have heard reports of anywhere between $750 and $1,250 installed at the dealer. Since it's a dealer thing, it's best to go price it out, and this is assuming there are even replacement seals available. You can get the seals for like $250-$500 on ebay brand new though.

For the clips, if I remember right they are cheap, less than 10 bucks a piece.

I know the prices suck ass, and you will probably blow a lot of cash on it, but after it will be like your car is brand new. No leaks, no roof rattle, no BS

RPG2ach 08-03-2010 07:48 PM

Good thing I never had roof rattle huh? My leak is the one behind the brake light...god have mercy when I finally get time to rip my Sol apart...She is gonna hate me from all the meticulous cleaning

imm0rtal 08-04-2010 06:47 AM

Well you're lucky you don't have to replace all of the seals then! But yeah those clips are pretty cheap at honda and should fix your roof leak...good luck man
