JDM GSR No VTEC

So recently my engine has decided not to let VTEC engage and I am looking to see if anyone has some insight on underlying issues that I have over looked.

History: I have a Jdm GSR OBD1 swapped into a 93 Civic SI running on a chipped P30 ECU(engine has been in the car for about 2+ years now). Everything has been running flawlessly until now.

It throws the Check engine code: 21(VTEC Solenoid)

I have done the following with no resolution to the problem.
- checked all wiring to the VTEC solenoid & pressure sensor
- replaced VTEC solenoid screen
- checked engine temperature sensor/wiring
- checked oil level/pressure

I know the VSS can cause VTEC to not engage and my speedometer works about 90% of the time but I’ve had this issue since I got the car in 2003 in which VTEC had always worked. To my knowledge all that leaves now is my ECU?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Did you check the knock sensor?

Nayrb_eg 01-20-2016 12:16 PM

That I have not done, I'll take a look.

HondaBoy[T] 01-20-2016 12:48 PM

after you changed that did the cel go away?
did u reset the ecu? disconnected the battery?

Nayrb_eg 01-20-2016 12:57 PM

I did disconnect the battery for a little bit. The CEL will clear but once the car is taken over 5800 RPM the CEL comes back on.

not the optimal ecu configuration to run that particular engine

try a stock ecu and see what happens

cbaracing 01-20-2016 01:56 PM

and that is going to do what? cause a code 21?

if its chipped ecu the knock is probably disabled :type:

Nayrb_eg 01-20-2016 02:00 PM

That's what i had figured, I am currently trying to source an obd1 P72

cbaracing 01-20-2016 02:40 PM

or even just a stock p28 to run it to see if the code pops up :type:

4dr_ed3 01-20-2016 02:43 PM

did you do any recent maintenance or anything in particular to the car recently? or it just kinda randomly happened

Nayrb_eg 01-20-2016 02:47 PM

I'll give my P28 a shot and see what happens
If only I had received the right ECU with my motor from HMO but they shipped an OBD2 ECU, which instead of exchanging it I just sold it :flush:.

HondaBoy[T] 01-20-2016 03:03 PM

ecu is still finding vtec sol? Once upon a time my "chipped" ecu wouldnt engage vtec and ran like shit. Re-loaded the tune and all was fixed.

S!K TEG 01-20-2016 03:09 PM

Didn't see the part where it was a chipped ecu.

And the knock senor could cause VTEC not to work. :beatdeadhorse2:

Nayrb_eg 01-20-2016 03:24 PM

Yeah, Just randomly happened. The car is pretty much a dedicated fun/track car so I drive it maybe twice a month if that.

Here's the story of how it happened:

I did a small pull in it, once it surpassed 5800 rpm the CEL came on and no VTEC. I ran the code and it was for the Coolant temperature sensor. I noticed 1 of the two wires to the connector had pulled out of the connector, so i fixed that. Started it and no CEL appeared so I let it warm up and took it out for a spin. I did another pull and once again CEL cam on after i passed 5800 rpm and no VTEC. Checked the code and it was for the VTEC solenoid.

cbaracing 01-20-2016 03:32 PM

and have you reset the ecu since? :type:

Nayrb_eg 01-21-2016 07:19 AM

I have not, I'll reset the ECU and try again.

480-760-3312 text this guy he may have an obd1 gsr ecu

cbaracing 01-21-2016 10:46 AM

yes but do you know which obd1 gsr ecu it is? :type:

Nayrb_eg 01-21-2016 11:13 AM

P72-003 or P72-a01?

cbaracing 01-21-2016 11:17 AM

p61 is obd1 gsr and so is p72 :type:

but one is b17 and the other is b18c

Nayrb_eg 01-21-2016 11:25 AM

Since i have a stock intake manifold w/ the secondary intake butterflys I'm leaning towards needing the P72 over the P61. Right now i am weighing the options of either picking up a P72 or just forking out the buck and getting S300 for my P28.

cbaracing 01-21-2016 12:31 PM

well the only one to run a b18c stock is the p72. i was just pointing out that there are 2 gsr obd1 ecu

i would go hondata s300. you wont regret it :type:

Littlejon1378 01-21-2016 02:48 PM

If he has a gsr ecu it is a p72 he has a 95 gsr

cbaracing 01-21-2016 03:02 PM

yes but you didnt know that at first :type:

Broskiballa 01-22-2016 11:19 AM

Still having engagement problems?

cbaracing 01-22-2016 12:45 PM

thats what she said

Broskiballa 01-22-2016 03:37 PM

Oh you! :whip:

Nayrb_eg 01-23-2016 04:05 PM

Update:
My p30 ECU is fried, ran it with the p28 and VTEC engaged with no CEL. Looks like I'll be ordering S300 very very soon.
Thanks everyone for the input

cbaracing 01-25-2016 10:24 AM

i know a guy who can get one :guns:

Broskiballa 01-28-2016 01:40 PM

Nice dude! <Vtec
