doin ur own paint job?????

i have a project bb2 and been mostly doin motor work and stuff. now its time to get some of the body done. when i bought the car it had this messed up body kit and looked like crap. so i recently bought some used parts such as fenders, front bumper, rear bumper, they were all different colors. i did the rear bumper myself just usin some krylon spray bottle but i want to redo the whole car. i want a matte white look with no glare. if ya can give any ideas to get this done the cheapest way, but not look cheap. and i dont really feel like tryin to redo the whole car on some spray cans. any input is welcome thanks.

I'm doing a cheapo job on my EG right now. I bought a spray gun kit from Home Depot for $80, a used air compressor for $50 ( a Harbor Freight brand that sells new for about $100 - 2 HP with 8 gallon tank), and Rustoleum red paint. The trick is to thin the paint with a 50/50 mix with Mineral Spirits, then lay down several light coats, letting each coat dry for a few days and wet sand before the next layer.

I've tried the rattle can thing and it looked terrible. This is turning out much better, at least as good as the typical Maaco job.

Just be ready to have your car tied up for a while. It would suck to have to remove all the masking, then reapply it every few days to spray the next layer.

This is the troof. I did this with my first project/DD when I was 16...

that's why it is still in primer to this day;)

ummm.....dont use a rattle can to paint your car first off....it'll look like shit

second, its not hard to paint your own car, i've painted mine three times, you just need patience.

if your looking for a flat finish, but flat paint. or buy a single stage acrylic enamel and thin it out with reducer, that kills the glossy finish and leaves it with the finish that your looking for.

Mmmmm....Paint.

diabolical 03-10-2009 05:53 AM

how much do u charge 4 a paint job?

diabolical 03-10-2009 05:54 AM

yeah the spray can way was all i could think of instead of driving with three colors on my ride lol

SlowLS 03-10-2009 08:13 AM

I need to see your car first, but i typically charge 300 plus paint for the whole car, that price is with no body work and no door jams, those are extra because its a bitch to do usually.

oh and i can get the paint for cheap as well so let me know

SlowLS 03-11-2009 08:38 PM

i personally dont wet sand unless im gonna do a mirror finish with several coats of clear coat.

i'd sand it with 250 then spray bull dog(an adhesive) then paint, i wouldnt waste my time primering. primers main purpose is to show you the flaws of the body before for paint. so dont primer unless you did some repairs to the moldings and skirts.

randizle 03-12-2009 04:10 PM

dont use primer??? are you joking dude? not bashing you but i have painted a few car and its 10 times easyer to primer the whole car before painting it,

#1 reason is because when the whole car is one solid color you dont have to keep spraying coat after coat to cover all the colors your car might be, been there done that, its just wayyyyy easyer to primer then paint and you will save almost half the paint.

the bull dog adhesive that comes in a rattle can is ment to spray on things that are pollyurathane "sp" because paint cracks and chips easy off stock bumpers, not ment to spary a whole car with, you will end up with a funny looking paint job. can you post some of your car work?

70TWO NOVA 03-12-2009 05:46 PM

yeah sounds kinda wack to me too, if you are going to do something do it right......or face doing it twice.....
Ive been painting long enough to know that is a big no no, whether there is bodywork undernieth or not. 300 bucks.........you get what you pay for.
I would also like to see some of your work using this process, if you dont mind.

oh and also, i said to paint prep his moldings and side skirts wil bull dog, not to spray the whole car.

i would like to know how to get that shiny finish after painting with a rattle can.. ¿?

70TWO NOVA 03-20-2009 05:01 PM

the ones i did were not done with rattle can if that is what you are refering to...

mexboy 03-20-2009 05:09 PM

rOkaZ is refering to when someone does it with a rattle can, How can you get it shiny?

70TWO NOVA 03-20-2009 05:13 PM

gotcha, thats what i figured. well i always sprayed the color and then bought some rattle can clear and put on about 3 coats of that. It gets pretty shiny that way and you could probably buff it too if you wanted to.

mexboy 03-20-2009 05:18 PM

thanks, i'll let him know that
