dont you use the same feeler gauges as you would use on valves?
squeeze with hands and check gap i believe.

Once your cylinder walls have been sized appropriately (bored/ honed/ sleeved / whatever), you use a piston to press a ring down into the bore, use a feeler gauge to measure the current gap. Compare to desired gap, and use a PISTON RING FILE to adjust.
