Coolant bubbling out of resevoir tank
 

I have a 1991 honda civic si, with stock engine, I parked my car at the store yesterday and hear this boiling from resevoir tank and see some coolant on the ground. The temperature gauge is at normal operating temperature. I get the car home and let the car cool done and check how full radiator is and it was full, and res was at cool level where it should be. I also ran the engine until the car was at normal temp again and checked the fans and they work. Temp doesn't go above normal temp and hoses feel hot so the coolant is circulating. I don't get why the coolant was leaking out unless my resevoir was to full and had no room to expand and just overflowed. What do you guys think?

if your temp is normal then perhaps you have a bunch of air in your cooling system? not sure about this...

yea ur tank was to full so it just shoots out when it starts circulating no worries

^^^ don't tell him "no worries" when his coolant is boiling!!!

before anybody trys, boiling DOES NOT indicate blown head gasket. not in this case at least.

start by replacing the radiator cap. i'm positive thats all it needs by the situation you described.

the temp isn't going up, but your boiling point is going down because of a lack of pressure in the system.

Thanks guys, I'll try the radiator cap and just keep an eye on my temp gauge for now.

I agree "holla" but sounds like a blown head gasket to me.

nah. THIS guy has a blown headgasket --> ... overheats WHEN driving at speed, tailpipe emits white smoke, smells like coolant when he gets on it... <-- THAT is HG. which is not the situation the OP here is describing.

radiator caps are $6 to $8, regularly stocked at checker/autozone/pepboys. try it.

The whole boiling coolant thing happened to me, except my temp gauge went high too. After replacing everything and it not helping....it ended up being my radiator.. Replaced it and no issues since.

i would start with the cheapest put a theromstat first then take air out of system then see whats up

ur temp sensor is also prob not working and yes check thermo stat and radiator cap

^^^his temp sensor is most likely functioning just fine.

lack of pressure in the system has lowered his boiling point to the stock operating temperature of the system.

yes its functioning but prob not workin right ive seen it hapen b4 ive been in the automotive for years

Bingo! We have a winner! I literally just had this problem on my del sol. I hadn't changed my single core rad out for a dual core when I swapped, so my coolant was getting uber hot. New rad in and it runs like a champ :thumbup:

yup same thing happened to me 3 times this year just a t-stat...I'd try it they are really easy to change on a civic

sounds like head gasket!!

I replaced the radiator cap and so far the car has been fine no more leaking from resevoir. Temp gauge and fans look good. I'll keep you guys posted and thanks for all the feedback.
