E85 and Turbo

Ok, I have a question that maybe Joe at Locash can answer or anyone that runs E85. I have a closed deck sleeved GSR block, stage 3 Joe Alaniz race head, and a 60trim turbo set up.

Right now I am tuned on 91 octane at 14 pounds of boost. I would like to re-tune my car with Joe but on E85. I do have some questions about E85, if someone can help me out.

1. I know that with E85, it is basically 105 octane gas which would allow me to up my boost over using 91 octane and be a little less likely to suffer detonation at these boost levels the the typical pump gas. I know that I will lose like 20 to 30% gas mileage with E85 but I am ok with that as well.

2. My main question is will E85 destroy my stock fuel tank or fuel lines? As long as my car is properly tuned will I be ok using E85 and will driveability be the same as if I use regular 91 octane? I have tried to research this as best as possible but there are many opinions, so Joe or anyone using E85 let me know what your thoughts are on E85 and is it safe for daily driving.

UPDATE PAGE 2
261 miles / 11 gallons in the tank= 23.72 MPG on E85 03/26/2010 This is what my E85 MPG test came out as.

TurboElements 02-15-2010 12:39 PM

E85 is safe for daily driving, it will not hurt your tank, lines, etc... I have it in my car and there are other turbo honda people that have been running for quite sometime. Your biggest issue will be fuel delivery as you will need to up your fuel system to compensate for the extra flow needed to make power.

AZ_CIVIC 02-15-2010 12:55 PM

Well currently I have a Walboro intank fuel pump and RC 750CC injectors and tuning with S300. This was able to support 500WHP last time I dynoed at 19 pounds of boost on 100 octane gas so will the currenet fuel set up be enough to support 420ish on 15 pounds?

TurboElements 02-15-2010 01:11 PM

You should be able to get around 400 with a single pump but you will defiantly need at least 1000cc injectors and that is on a base pressure of 43psi.

AZ_CIVIC 02-15-2010 01:24 PM

Damn new injectors and I would need an inline pump, because I would want more then 400. Thanks.

TurboElements 02-15-2010 01:26 PM

Yes you can make good power with the 1000cc and a inline along with your intank, but if you really want to upgrade do a 044 inline and not a walbro.

That combo could get you in the mid 600hp range.

AZ_CIVIC 02-15-2010 01:51 PM

Oh yeah the Bosch 044 is a great pump and for 200 bucks its a great buy.

Mr.Burner 02-15-2010 03:41 PM

you can get them for $160 if you look hard enough...

E85 is a good choice if you can get it regularly

UMS Tuning Sales 02-15-2010 04:53 PM

We have been running E85 in the shop car for awhile now......
We have also tuned alot of local Evo's and srt-4s on it as well.

Works wonders.....you can run a lot more timing just like race gas without it hitting your wallet to hard.....

Trade offs are that its not as common as gas......I think there are about 10 E85 stations in Phoenix right now....

Also our experience has shown that typically to make the same power as you would on normal fuel, you need 30% more fuel. THis is on both pump and race fuel.

Like Turbo Elements said.....you will need bigger injectors and a second pump. along with the corresponding size fuel lines to handle the increased volume

honduh_head 02-15-2010 05:46 PM

sorry to thread jack, but would a 255 intank be sufficient for a decent all motor build? like 13.5 to 1 comp, 2.0 liters, cams, blah blah blah and be tuned on e85 and correctly sized injectors?

TurboElements 02-15-2010 05:50 PM

Yeah a single 255 would handle the duties of a all motor car and proper injectors.

Big C 02-15-2010 05:52 PM

I ran E85 in my 240 for a while. Best thing I ever did to it if you ask me. All the added timing made for some huge torque #'s compared to pump gas.

ej6pusha1998 02-15-2010 06:00 PM

great topic here, i have been planning on building my all motor B20/vtec and tuning it with E85, answered alot of my questions.

TurboElements 02-15-2010 06:22 PM

For the all motor guys I would suggest using ID1000cc and a single walbro with at least a -6an feed from tank to rail.

AZ_CIVIC 02-16-2010 09:13 AM

Yes today I am buying 1000cc Injector Dynamic fuel injectors, I am going to stick with the single walboro pump for now mainly because I know a Civic on here that made 560WHP tuned by Tim on E85 with the 1000cc Injector Dynamic injectors, and a single Walboro pump. This time I am only going for around 16 to 17 psi and sticking with 420 to 440 WHP so I think I will be fine.

The cool thing is, I have a gas station that carries E85 about 5 miles from my house, so I think I will go for it. My Civic will also been Green running this Flex fuel, I am doing good for the environment.

honduh_head 02-16-2010 07:33 PM

its more for the added timing than it is the added boost.

honduh_head 02-16-2010 07:34 PM

thanks for the info sir ;)

Big C 02-16-2010 08:30 PM

It does burn cleaner and smells good too lol

AZ_CIVIC 02-18-2010 11:15 AM

Thought I would add this video I found on Honda Tech, it is a couple years old but very interesting. Hold on the link isnt working let my find the web site

Watch the video about the E85 Ethonal doesn't harm non flex fuel vehicles it was pretty interesting. There is also a Acura Integra they show getting the E85 conversion kit getting done to, in other videos.

Mr.Burner 02-18-2010 07:25 PM

^ lol i wonder how many times thoughs kids have installed it...hahaha good advertisement.

gotta love hondata...thats all you need really.

adam 02-19-2010 11:14 AM

Lol In that video one of the kids randomly said I like pie. Had me crackin' up.

dEaFHATCH 03-15-2010 04:19 PM

screw E85... i will be running water/meth injection on my turbo GSR... you dont have to worry about finding a gas station that carries E85 and you can even run 87 octane and boost as much as you want... heres a link to a forum with a lot of info on it... i think youll be impressed

redwidow 03-15-2010 05:52 PM

E85 ftw been on it for yrs now when it was only in Tucson.

AZ_CIVIC 03-16-2010 07:38 AM

Got my car tuned with E85 and wanted to run low boost for the street.

Joe got me to 480 @ 16.8 PSI
Didn't even bother seeing what it would do at 25psi because 480 with AC/PS in my daily driver is all I need.

I will be doing a miles per gallon test on my car with average daily driving I can tell you just by looking at my gas guage doesn't look like much a difference but I will let everyone know.

honduh_head 03-17-2010 02:22 PM

awesome, i would love to know how the MPG comes out on E85

AZ_CIVIC 03-23-2010 09:37 AM

Ok I filled up on Sunday and I am doing the miles per gallon test on E85 with everyday driving, I even get in the throttle here and there to make it like everday driving. I would say by Thursday or Friday I will have the results.

All I got to say is right now I am impressed with what I am seeing, to bad I didn't do a MPG test while I was on 91.

Big C 03-23-2010 11:06 PM

I got like 12mpg when I was on e85 in my 240 but at that time it was just my fun car so I boosted the shit outta it lol. From what I hear tho it's at most 1-2 mpg less than pump gas when you drive normal.

AZ_CIVIC 03-24-2010 08:14 AM

Well, I for sure will know by Friday, I can tell you this, I put 10.7 gallons in my car that had the gas light on, so lets just say I started with 11 gallons. I have put 170 miles on my car and have a little less then half a tank. My average speed on freeways have been about 70 to 75 with many nice little boost pulls having fun.

Again the car is 480whp and my goal right now is to hit around 250 miles on this tank which gives me about 23 mpg, which is got to be dang close to what I was getting on 91.

Who knows maybe I got around 25mpg on pump but during the summers on 91 with 17 pounds of boost you are so much more likely to have detonation, then with E85.

Another good thing is price comparison right now 91 is about $3.00 a gallon and I am paying $2.49 for E85 which is 105 octane, so I am saving about 5.50 per tank. So when you do the math, lets say on pump gas I get 25 MPG and E85 I get 22MPG that would be 3 MPG more, over a 11 gallon capacity that would make it an extra 33 miles I will get on pump gas, but I will have to pay 5.50 more to fill up with 91, so technically I end up getting more for my money by using E85.

Big C 03-24-2010 11:26 PM

Yeah, E85 FTW. I loved using it in my 240 and if its not out of your way to get it, I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to use it. Its cheap and effective and the shit burns cool as fuck and is awesome for preventing detonation. Fuck 91 pump gas IMO.

Next boosted car I own will for sure be tuned on e85.

k20z3coupe 03-25-2010 09:25 AM

im gonna use e85 on my biuld and this thread makes me excited to use it
