This is just an opinion based on what I've seen lately, but it seems that the younger crowd has no patience. They want to buy or sell something instantly and not be part of a community. 150 posts, too hard! This Facebook auto parts group does.away with any contribution to the community...
Some of the older azht'ers I think have moved on. They were into the community before the internet was such a.dominant presence. So they had to hang out face to face, had to actually talk.about their rides. They had to communicate and enjoy the.scene in an 'old school' manner, much like hot rodders, classic car, rat rodders, etc do. Maybe I'm getting roo deep, but that's what I've seen. I'm into all things automotive, so it is interesting to compare the different traits these different groups have. |
Yeah exactly. I knew a kid who had this little Honda "crew" and they would drive the junkiest pieces of crap and instead of fixing the things it needed (one guy was literally missing a motor mount and had a cracked tranny case) they were buying short shifters and nrg hubs. With a scene full of cars that unreliable no wonder it's dying, the cars don't last more than a few months on the road. Lol
Maybe I'm just remembering it differently since I'm older now but tuner cars back when I was in high school weren't so shitty. Good stuff though with the pics, love to see the old stuff. Also I love the lights on that red crv! |
We didn't have much of a honda tuner scene when I was in HS the vehicle modification restrictions were strict in Virginia

2009 :
by , on Flickr by , on Flickr Obviously I was in the Miata. Hondas were more exciting back in those days, they were "purer." IMO the current offerings of the last few years have been bit "blah." ph8ed4life pretty much has the right idea. The proliferation of social media was not where it is now, so getting people out to do things was easier. Nowadays people view things like facebook and forums as social interaction, and while these are fun/useful tools - they don't hold a candle to kicking back and enjoying hanging out with some good people. You have to basically nearly beg to get some people to come out these days. |
Have you owned any Hondas?
As far as questions of the "are Hondas still cool" nature go, I personally couldn't give a shit. I didn't get interested in Hondas, or in cars in general because it was in style or because others were doing it. I liked playing around with cars, so I did. I developed a fondness for Hondas for their simplicity, reliability, their fun to drive factor, their practicality, and their styling which seemed to be a perfect combination of cuteness, aggression, and quality. Plus the overall build quality was galaxies beyond the loose clatter box muscle cars that I was into before Hondas. Here's some old pics I still have. I was always into clean, stock cars, so I don't really have any old ricey pics to share. These weren't Hondas, but when I had those 2 Trans Ams sitting outside my single wide, I was the baddest mofo in the trailer park! Thanks for getting me to dig up old pics so I could relive this glorious memory! |
That little civic panel hatch looks badass! Yeah I often answer when asked why I like Hondas do much, that it's because that was my first car, and it becomes a slippery slope. If I had got a jeep for my first car I may have became a jeep guy, I just like working on things and Hondas is what I started with. Now that I'm older I realize they really are one of the best brands out there, Hondas and toyotas are amazing vehicles. I guess I just want a new challenge. In the past I've had a few various toyotas and things and it's just exciting to crack into something new.
But seriously what happened to the panel car? |
That was a '75 Civic 4-door wagon that had been converted into a panel wagon. It had the engine (D16A6), trans., and front seats (which were MINT) out of a '90 CRX Si. It had front brakes that came off an old Porsche, and it had a 75 shot nitrous set up. It also had remnants of a very nice stereo system (amps under the seats and lots of wiring). The hood had the rows of little vents punched in like you see on old hot rods. I don't know where the wheels came from, but they were some cool as hell 13"s.
I did not build it. I just got it running again, then ended up selling it. When I bought it, it wasn't driveable. It had a busted axle that had to be custom made. Both axles were custom, but of course the shorter one kept breaking as that one was transmitting more torque. I made a stronger axle for it, cleaned it up a bit, then sold it. The guy that sold it to me told me the story behind it. Apparently it was built by the guy that owns (or owned) the Precision Honda/Acura repair shop in Tucson. Everything was custom on the car and well done. It was a very unique build that someone put a lot of heart into. It has been years since I sold it, but I did see it on the streets of Tucson a few times since. When I had it, everyone told me it looked like a mini PT Cruiser, which I hated hearing. Nobody knew it was a Civic. It did have a front bumper, I just had it off in that pic. Here's a couple engine pics: |
That's beautiful I wish I had the time to build something like that. Some kind of mid 70s Honda, just love that style.
|
Love the hood louvers on the panel wagon. Man that things bad ass.

The guy that bought it from you regrets selling it too
|
|
Yes!
It isn't that they are cool/not cool - it is that honestly in the last ten years has Honda made anything that has captured the formula of cheap, fun, potential, loved as it used to? Not IMO... Anyways, here is the last Honda I owned : I built this car in the late late 90s - these pics were take probably a couple years later given the combat wing on the del sol lol. Even though it was kitted and not up to today's trends - I would still rock this car if I still had it. by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr B16 swap, nitrous, cams, header, intake, ported throttle body, 9lb flywheel, puck clutch, etc. Wings West Kit, Konig wheels, etc. Before most people here were driving power wheels ;) |
Wow things has changed alot. Early 2000's pics reminds me of the late 90's. Man time flies too fast.
