need help on amps and subs

ok. i heard people that had 10 inchu sub 200 watt with a 200 watt amp and hits hard. what makes it hit hard.

low watt sub with high watt amp

low watt amp with high watt aub.

i am asking cuase i always wanted a hard hitting sound system. i got speaker in my moms car with a cd player. but i have a 300 wat sub with 750 watt amp and sounds ok but not hard hitting cause then it sound like crap. so what makes a good hitting sound?

bumpstick 11-26-2008 04:04 PM

the simplest way to build a hard hitting system is to start with an efficient subwoofer. efficiency is measured the same for all subs. given 1 watt, it's how loud (in dB) a speaker is 1 meter from a measuring tool (mic) in an infinite baffle (free air). for example, if a sub is rated at 96 dB efficiency, it will make 96 dB given 1 watt, 99 dB given 10 watts, 102 dB given 100 watts, and on and on and on. build a box using the sub manufacturers specs. if you want to hit hard, build a vented box. then pick an efficient amplifier that has an RMS power rating equivalent to or higher than the RMS input power that your sub can handle. that's the simple way to be loud. i'm sure 100 other people will post up adding more info or discounting what i've posted, but this is the way i do it and it works.

ok. thanks. so i just need a bigger box cause i got a POS box.

Honduhluv 11-27-2008 02:01 AM

12" sub is good and port the box for more bass response. My setup in my car is a 12" sub with a 400watt amp and it hit pretty decent just to annoy the parents..lol.

Make sure not to draw soo much power from the system the your lights fade has the bass hits.

pm Stock .. he knows what hes doin and he can get it done in no time

blackouthx 11-27-2008 11:59 AM

Just remember a box plays an important role in a system. you could have a 2000watt sub paired with a 2000watt amp and it sound like crap because of a poorly constructed box.

also how do you have your sub/amp wired?

what are your goals? what music do you listen to? any reason you want a 10 rather than a 12 or 15?

jus-lookn03 11-27-2008 03:19 PM

hell i have a 8" with a 800 watt amp and bump fine in my ep . i use a bazooka type tube

S!K 11-28-2008 07:02 AM

i know about drawing to much power. but i dont have it hit that hard.

ok thanks

i have a 10 ince sub (punch) and i have it in a slim box and i have it bridged on my 750 watt amp. thats why my reasons for having a 10 instead a 12. i do got a 15 but i dont want to buil a big box since i still kinda use a my trunk.

oh. you have a prebuilt box.

what kind of would wood i use. i was planning of building a box with two side of plixie glass.

Chubbz 11-28-2008 08:40 AM

also you will need some caps, cuz after i put my caps in my system , sounded way better and louder..

But like blackouthx said the box does play a HUGE role in your system..

BlownspeakerBoX 11-28-2008 11:26 PM

cap are good,,, dry cell battey, even a generic 12v battery is even better

S!K 11-30-2008 08:36 AM

what are caps?

what you do you mean?

i cant afford buying good stuff. i got ls seat if you got good amp and subs to trade for?

well now i got that 300 watt punch sub with 1000 watt crunch amp. its hit a little better but today i will build it a box. i'll be useing compressed wood ( i think thats what it is called)

FranktheTank 11-30-2008 12:46 PM

if your going to build a box, Research some designs and set ups online.

And use Mdf wood.

S!K 12-01-2008 07:43 AM

ok thanks guy.

well, i built a box yesturday and i'll post pix of it. i havn't heard to see how hard it hits but i think it'll do fine.

IntegraDA 12-04-2008 08:05 PM

post up pics! i wan wondering if someone would say it..a few came close, bumpstick hit it dead on....yes it is mainly how the box is constructed and all about how it is tuned. JL especially, design their subs to be used in a corresponding sq. ft. box size. I have a jl 12w3v3 in a box tuned to JL's specs and on an 400w rms premier amp, it sounds god like. Post up pics and inside demensions of your box you built. Some of us here can tell you wether or not its going to sound good based on that.

Dear lord. Get a spec sheet for that sub and build a SEALED BOX OF THE PROPER AIRSPACE.And YES I AM YELLING....And dont listen to anyone telling you you need " Caps Y0!!!!!" because you sir,DO NOT..........You need an enclosure of the proper airspace....I did this shit for years back in Illinois, and am MECP certified. If you have any questions PM me.

Stock? 12-08-2008 01:51 PM

yeah, definitely need to get a smaller box - the one you made is big enough for 2 subs lol
also, what kind of car do you have? a hatchback is going to give you a lot better bass then something with an enclosed trunk

peakprocess 02-17-2009 12:01 AM

also is that a 4 channel amp? if ur using one sub u shud only run a 2ch or mono amp. hatches are the easiest to achieve great sounding bass with less wattage.

Manga_Spawn 02-17-2009 02:59 PM

Yeah that box is way to big. Go to JL website they have a how to for building a sub box. That is what I used when I built mine. What you need to to do is look up the specs on your sub it should have a spec for airspace. With some subs it will even tell you what airspace you need for both a sealed box and a ported box. You also have to realize that your 1000 watt amp and 400 watt sub are not really those numbers. Those are the max output what you need to look at when you are buying amps subs etc is the rms output which is what the amp can put out continueously and what the sub can handle continuously.

Also the reason it hits harder now is because you took out the tweeter and have a hole in the side of the box making it a ported box. I would just scrap that box and build a new one according to JL's how to guide. It should work much better.

that one guy 02-19-2009 10:15 AM

you need a smaller box for sure.
go to home depot, buy a sheet of 3/4" MDF, and then go here:

Honduhluv 02-20-2009 12:21 AM

U still running the one i traded ya that one hit hard when it was in my car it made the headunit skip the cd while it was playin.

Wit the speakers in have in their now i dont need a sub or amp to make them bump.

When i wired my amp i usually wire it to the headunits power or antenna wire. When with antenna the amp will turn on once the headunit it on.

gsr1379 02-21-2009 04:55 PM

IDMAX 12
PDX1000.1
and a Sealed box would Beat

then you would need to upgrade the front stage speakers and amp as well :)
