transmission question

i have a jdm k20a type r motor in my rsx but it has a ep3 transmission because the previous owner was going to boost it so my question is if i get a type s transmission will i be able to use the clutch and flywheel off of the a3 on the type s tranny??? thanks in advance

johnehonda 02-08-2012 01:26 AM

YES, clutch has nothing to do with how many gears the tranny has

PhxKid92 02-08-2012 08:21 AM

alright so i shouldnt have any problems putting the type s tranny in and using the old parts off of the ep3 to the new tranny?

johnehonda 02-08-2012 11:17 AM

nope 02-04 s tranny works with everything you have

Base, Type-S or Type-R drivetrain parts do not always mix and match. This means you can't use a Base Flywheel with a Type-S Clutch and Pressure Plate

Interesting comp. k20a with an ep3 5 speed tranny? How is the pull?

PhxKid92 02-09-2012 06:36 PM

its alright nothing special lol

LONESTAR 02-10-2012 02:16 AM

its a straight bolt bolt on if u swap. i got a type s tranny on my a3

Fix.it.again.Tony 02-10-2012 02:21 AM

which clutch/pressure plate/etc are you using though

Colten79 02-10-2012 08:23 AM

I've always been told they were completely different.. But I've never owned a 5speed tranny to check for myself..

Dead Bird 02-10-2012 05:56 PM

If you are running a base clutch/pressure plate, you must have a base flywheel.
If you are running a type-s clutch/pressure pltate, you must have a type-s flywheel.

I'm almost positive the actual spline size and teeth count of the input shaft are the same, so you should be able to just swap the transmission while keeping the same clutch.

Colten, if you still have your old clutch disk, bring it over while my 5spd is out of the car and we can see.

Colten79 02-10-2012 07:43 PM

Very true..

PhxKid92 02-10-2012 09:56 PM

weird my transmission has a ep3 code on it but its a fucking 6 speed ???? what kind of shit is that....this whole time i thought it was a 5 speed but its a 6 speed previous owner even told me it was a 5 speed but its definitely a 6

Colten79 02-11-2012 04:39 PM

You sure its 6th, or reverse? Is the car running?

PhxKid92 02-11-2012 06:13 PM

yes im sure its a 6 speed and yes the car is running and no its not reverse lol its a 6 speed i just never bothered trying to go into 6th because previous owner said it was a 5 speed but its deffintly not a 5

Dead Bird 02-11-2012 06:32 PM

There's no possible way.

You must be mistaken

PhxKid92 02-11-2012 06:40 PM

il make a video its a 6 speed no im not mistaking how the hell can u mistake that? iv driven 6 speeds before i know what the hell im talking about lol

C.R.A.Y. 02-11-2012 06:41 PM

Liar

PhxKid92 02-11-2012 06:42 PM

even aaron from tsr drove my car and he even said it was a 6 speed

PhxKid92 02-11-2012 06:43 PM

ok i lied a little bit when i said i knew what i was talking about lol but its not a 5

PhxKid92 02-11-2012 06:55 PM

Is it possible i have a jdm ep3 6 speed tranny?

Dead Bird 02-11-2012 07:28 PM

They exist.

That would make it a ctr tranny with lsd on a 4.7 final. Your 1-5th gears would be short as fuck

But I believe it's also possible to put a 6gear stack in the ep3 case.

PhxKid92 02-11-2012 07:33 PM

Idk its weird i had aaron from tsr drive it and he said it was a 6 and it is and i took it to bbn aswell and they said it had a ep3 code on it so honestly im confused as fuck i just want to know what transmission i have lol

thakid 02-12-2012 02:18 AM

possibly the tsx 6th gear added
