b16a erratic idle....

Ok, so a quick run down, 1994 civic hatchback, DX with a JDM b16a swap with a type r intake manifold....
A few weeks ago it suddenly started idling high(averages about 1800). And will drop down and right back up(doesn't do this consistently but quite often)
I've checked for vacuum leaks and all is well
Bled the cooking system(no air)
I've replaced the iacv in the past(I'd say two years ago) however, it was a salvage yard part.
I'm accustomed to testing the iacv by unplugging it and having the idle either do nothing or it ramps up a bit, today, I unplugged it and the car died.
I still need to test the TPS and the MAP. Anyone have good ways of testing these(my electrical knowledge sub par and my multimeter is kinda crappy.

Any help/ideas/advice is greatly appreciated.

how? :icon_lol:

Check your tps, its been a problem on a couple of my cars.

If you have a spare map/tps clip paying around its super easy, cause then you dont need to cut anything.

larios2281 11-13-2014 09:22 PM

Is your ecu chipped?

xbyedge 11-16-2014 05:50 PM

Ok so heres an update from today,

I had an old tps laying around and installed that with no change in the idle.
The iacv though, at one point i tapped on it a few times with a rubber mallet and it kind of seemed like it changed a bit. Didnt stay that way long though and was not able to replicate it. I dont know if something in it may be sticking?
Also, the car dies whenever i unplug the iacv. Shouldnt the car stay running? I was under the impression that if it is unplugged, if the idle doesnt change any, it is bad, and if the idle goes up considerable, it is operating properly. But the car just dies immediately when i unplug it.
thoughts?

I do not have a spare map sensor.

My ecu is chipped. hondata s100 with i believe the spoon base map.(done at SRD)

Does it have a FITV valve on the bottom of the throttle body?
If so ---->

If you take the back plate off the FITV and that white plastic piece has unscrewed this will cause erratic idle you describe. unscrew it as shown on the link, dab some hondabond on the threads, screw it back in tight and you should be good.

Unfortunately do not have an fitv. Type r intake manifold.

IS-Frank 11-20-2014 11:47 PM

Bad manifold gasket?

cbaracing 11-21-2014 09:23 AM

fitv has nothing to do with the intake manifold :doobie:

xbyedge 11-21-2014 10:12 AM

The stock TB That came with the manifold does not have an fitv.

No leaks in the gasket.

Ok, so another update... Replaced the iacv(with a used one) and the tps(new one) and it seemed to fix the problem for the most part. Made it 24 hours without issues, and just a little bit ago, as I'm pulling into my neighborhood it starts idling at 2000 steadily. No fluctuation, just a high idle.

xbyedge 11-21-2014 10:56 PM

And another update..... Unhooked the battery(at the kill switch) for roughly 10 or so minutes. Started it back up, idled at about 1500 for a minute then dropped down to around 1000-1200(very slow and slight fluctuation)

xbyedge 11-25-2014 08:35 PM

Still has a steady 2000 idle at all times...... Comments?

cbaracing 11-26-2014 10:40 AM

chipped ecu :doobie:

what does it do with a stock ecu?

xbyedge 11-26-2014 10:23 PM

So youre assuming the chip is the problem? What makes you think that?
And I have no other ECU's, so I'm not sure how it would run on a stock ecu.

Nachooooosupreme 11-28-2014 01:30 AM

Cba knows his shit. Don't question his questioning, he's trying to show you how to eliminate one problem at a time!

xbyedge 11-28-2014 12:18 PM

^^^^^ Calm down nacho. I asked a pretty standard question. I never implied cba doesn't know their shit. You wouldn't replace your tires or struts without asking why right? Same idea here.

cbaracing 11-28-2014 03:46 PM

ive seen this problem happen with chipped ecus. i have a stock ecu you can borrow if need be :doobie:

xbyedge 12-16-2014 07:23 PM

Well finally a good update. Its been fixed for a week or so now but wanted to give it some time to be sure. Replaced the iacv yet again(with a known good one) and that fixed me right up. Been running well ever since.
Cbaracing... I really appreafiate that offer. Really. Fortunately I won't be needing it. Thanks for all your help though. Everyone else as well. Thank you.
