Testing compression not in car
Anyone here ever tested a motor that isn't in a shell?
Before I swap in a dropout I want to ensure the rings are OK. I do have a couple questions 1. Does it matter what gear the transmission is in or if it has fluid? 2. does it matter that I don't have headers on the block? This might be a goofy question as I know it shouldn't but maybe I'm missing something Any help is appreciated. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |
Make sure engine has oil, trans in neutral. Need the starter and would be very ideal to have a push start starter tester to crank the engine with loose battery. Or you would need two people to crank and test compression. Just remember that done that way, will throw alot of sparks.

How do I find neutral?

Honestly it wont really matter cause there is no weight that the transmission is conne ted to to move. It will spin just the mass inside the trans.

Compression test would be okay, but I would much rather do a leak down test. That will tell you IF you have a problem and WHERE that problem is. Seals, rings, valves or head gasket.

True, but you would start with a compression test. A compression test if not up to par would lead you into a leakdown test. Leakdown does take time and is effective but it wont tell you if you have a good quench.

Turns out it was a great way to unload a nice bike for a POS :( Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk |
