1994 Integra dies while driving

I've searched and can't find anything more than guessed at random everything, so maybe someone has had this issue.

I get in the car, start it and drive. Runs fine, no stutter, no hesitation.

Then at any speed, doesn't matter, no set amount of time it dies. Just on and running, then off, dead. All the accessories stay on, but the engine has no power at all.

I changed the main relay, as I read that could be it, but it still does it. Next thing anything I found is distributor, but it sounds like people guessing wildly.

Any real ideas?

When it dies off, are you able to restart the car and get going again?

trace01m 12-28-2015 06:59 PM

It will restart, sometimes right away, sometimes I have to wait

Igniter is my wild guess

If its a distributor problem I have parts to fix it

LS-S DA9 12-28-2015 08:48 PM

Help him and let him test drive before buying ;)

Well of course

trace01m 12-29-2015 06:12 AM

That would be awesome but I'm in tucson and I think all you guys are in Phoenix

phatman 12-29-2015 07:01 PM

I'm down in T-town as well, but I don't think my distro will work with your car. Otherwise I'd let you borrow it to test. :|

trace01m 12-29-2015 09:39 PM

I had to suck it up and bought a new distributor. I'll let you guys know if it dies again and we can take turns making guesses

LS-S DA9 12-29-2015 11:06 PM

From where did you buy the distributor?

Igniter, fact.

trace01m 12-30-2015 07:01 AM

AutoZone. I know, not ideal, but they were the only place I found it that I could make it to

Dont they sell igniters separate? I dont know if you can take apart your old dizzy completely but if you can check to see that your wires are all intact. My last dizzy was some how shorting out on something and the wires got so hot the plastic around the wires melted off and was causing all kinds of issues. First thing i replaced was a coil. kept having issues. It wasnt untill i tried to take it all apart that i saw the real issue. Got a newly used dizzy that was in good working order. I took the guts out of it and put it in my dizzy because it was already modified to run on my b16 head. (LS dizzy)

Crazy thought. Have you tried not turning it off while driving? Had my grandpa do the same thing. Kept saying his car kept turning off while driving, thats because he would turn it off.

Just saying.

Are you throwing out any c.e.l codes?

cbaracing 12-30-2015 11:24 AM

i like all the guessing and dizzyness

Chuck Chainz 12-30-2015 12:44 PM

This is where an FSM and multimeter would be ideal

All the trouble shooting goodness is within those pages and with the magic of the multimeter nothing can stand in your way!

cbaracing 12-30-2015 01:05 PM

that still wont tell you if the ignition switch went bad :word:

Chuck Chainz 12-30-2015 01:35 PM

I never said ignition switch I said igniter

I found out mine was bad that way... FSM and a Multimeter

cbaracing 12-30-2015 01:41 PM

i know what you were saying

an ignition switch that is starting to fail and doesnt want to hold in the run position will cause the same problems :hello:

S!K TEG 12-30-2015 01:57 PM

Also, a bad temp coolant sensor located on the head, below the distributor.

My civic would run for a while then just randomly shut off then have to wait for it to cool down to start it up, Just an idea.

cbaracing 12-30-2015 02:41 PM

that has nothing to do with it. thats just your luck :samuri:

4dr_ed3 12-30-2015 03:42 PM

do you have a battery in the car?

S!K TEG 12-30-2015 04:54 PM

Well, that civic was a bunch of problems, so you maybe right. But, doesn't hurt to swap out.

cbaracing 12-30-2015 08:24 PM

True dat :drunk:

trace01m 12-31-2015 09:47 AM

I do have a multimeter, I just sadly didn't have time to mess I with it, because it's currently my only working car.

The distributor fixed the problem, it could have been the igniter but I didn't want to take it apart, either. I remember doing that before and it was worth it to me to spend the $100 difference and get all new parts.

Chuck Chainz 12-31-2015 11:00 AM

Good to hear you fixed it.
