engine block

I read alot of articles and videos about prepping the engine block before installing the headgasket. So is using the sandpaper 200 400 600 grit safe to use?

What?!
Seriously?!
I've never sanded for head gasket prep, sounds like a bad idea.

Copper spray at best.

Use a die grinder and 3M roloc disk (green one.) Go lightly.

I sand my block but, only where I can't get the baked on head gasket off.

If a razor blade doesn't remove some of the old head gasket, I use 1000 grit sand paper on the block surface and lightley sand to make the bumbs go away. I have done this all my life and never had an issue.

If you don't have 1000grit, and you have 400 grit for example. Sand it against another 400 paper to make it finer. Keep sanding on each other until really fine or feels like 1000 grit.

Good luck.

All that is too much work.

Green fluffy Rolocs are made for surface prep. You can get away with just one on a 4 cylinder headgasket job.

Seriously, just throw a green 2" roloc on a right angle die grinder and go over the block and head mating surfaces....

They easily dispatch gasket material, sealant, put a nice surface on the metal, and are not aggressive enough that you can damage the mating surfaces. I have been using them for 12+ years on everything from my own engines to 100k+ dollar engines....

Off Amazon you can get a box of 25 2" Fine fluffy Roloc discs for 16 bucks, the mandrel is 4 bucks, and harbor freight has the die grinders for like 10 bucks. That is enough to do many, many gaskets on all your things. You could probably use them to shine up your toe nails, and grind off your warts and corns too.
