help me learn!

i have this guy who wants to trade me whips, and he says his eg coupe has a d15b vtec, and he says, "it was running great, i just skipped the timing(its an easy fix)... how easy of a fix is this?

HEADSHOT 04-09-2007 10:43 AM

how off is the timing?

you may be able to deal with it if it's off a tooth or 2, but anymore than that and you may be looking at piston to valve contact, which is NO BUENO, and definate grounds for AT LEAST a motor tear down, if not a complete rebuild. The questions I'D be asking is how the fuck he managed to skip teeth on the timing...

have him reset the timing and prove to you its working fine :)

if the timing belt is loose or worn it can happen somewhat easily. if the timing is off a few degrees you should be able adjust the dizzy to get it back to correct timing< not the permanent solution.

he wont relle tell me anything. all he says is he is too "lazy" to do the work. but its an eazy fix...

tuybotom 04-10-2007 05:12 PM

ok.... well if the timing belt jumped im sure you have some bent valves and the car will

a. not run .........or.........
b. run like shit
the car probably needs some headwork done to it

Ok, I've sat back, time to talk..

The car is mine, and was running great, NO TAPPING (No bent valves). I was driving the car, got on it a little bit, bounced off of the revv limiter for a split second, let out of it, coasted to the next light, then the car died.. It cranks strong as fuck, has spark, has fuel, so..... I'm assuming its off timing a tooth or 2. Like I said, easy fix, I'm just too lazy (and don't have ANY tools).. That's the story. This is also the reason I'm selling it for $2500 as-is, cause if I fix it I'll ask $3000..

*inFamous* 04-10-2007 05:37 PM

if you want me to fix it you can bump that price to 3k and i'll see what we can do

easy to re set timing...i did it on my d15b before only took maybe 45 mins. plus justin is a great seller and wouldnt sell or trade shit that would be fucked up with out telling you

Some facts:
- Even at shop prices of $50-100/hr, puting the timing belt back to the proper specs wouldn't be more than 1 hr max (<--I can do this)
- Piston to valve contact does not always result in "tapping valves"
- Compression and/or leakdown test is required to know the real story (I can do both)
- Camshaft timing can affect ignition timing (i.e. turning the distributor) but they are really two totally different things

PM me if you want to hire me to fix/test your car to make it easier to sell.

Thank you SiR.. I will always disclose known problems.. I am as legit as they get.
Sounds cool, HOWEVER.. I spent damn near every dime I had just buying this thing, so as much as I would love to do buisness with you, I simply can't afford anything right now. That's why the car is sitting on the other side of town, still in the same parking lot as it was pushed to. Thank you very much for the offer though.
