the good and bad to owning an ek

so I am a ek (96-00) civic owner and ive noticed some of the great things about these year civics and some bad i was jus wondering what were some of ur opinions on the good things/ bad???

for me some good things are
one of the biggest engine bays
spacious interior
the car isnt to old
and u can slam the shit out of them

some bad are...
obd2 can be a bitch unless u convert
climate controls break really easy
and headlights fade really easy

so what are your guys opinions on the good and bad to owning the (96-00) civics?

rudsone 06-22-2009 09:48 PM

great thread since i plan on purchasing one, keep em coming.

RedEk 06-22-2009 09:48 PM

the only thing i hate a out mine is that its too sexy thats it i love obd2 cuz its so easy to deal with on emissions but i only have one code i have to take off and im good

RedEk 06-22-2009 09:49 PM

im planning on selling mine in the future maybe im ganna start it at 5000 its clean as shit except i have an oil leak not that bad just makes my block look black it only drips a little wen im paked and not running

FranktheTank 06-22-2009 10:04 PM

Thats why they changed it in the 99-00 models to knobs instead of the sliding lever.
and the headlight issue isnt a big deal.
EVERY car that is as old as Ek's get faded and foggy lights.

4inspeed 06-22-2009 10:06 PM

good:

cleanest body style in almost all models/trims
the most recent "built" so all the guys getting out of them are getting rid of there "nice"/"rare" parts
99-00 climate controls for many reasons
cars can be found cheap and actually resold for reasonable prices with little work done

bad:

honda changed suspension setups for the civic in the 96 year, weaker rear subframe
99-00 fronts are a big target for theft
any modified honda for a dd is bad...

ill think of more in both realms and update...

Jason.AZ1 06-22-2009 10:09 PM

nice

nbdracin 06-22-2009 10:32 PM

headlights situation ur right i fixed mine up no problem really easy and not to expensive but for the climate controls... not everyone drives a 99-00 lol like me... im in a well disguised 98

nbdracin 06-22-2009 10:34 PM

i actually made this thread so that the other sections can catch on and make one.... cause i would like to look into getting a second car and its helpful to know what are the pros/cons

FranktheTank 06-22-2009 10:41 PM

Hey if you have a 96-98 you can always put the 99-00 climate control in there.
you just gotta change the heater core too and do a little wiring!
worth it imo

azjared 06-22-2009 11:12 PM

their stock front seats suck, gave mine away for free

HI_howyourcar 06-22-2009 11:51 PM

i have a 97 ek hatch with 00 front end
good :
you get compliment on everywhere you go ( if you done it the right way and make it look nice )
mass production of civic , therefore mass produce or used parts ( great for rebuild and in need )
bunch of aftermarket supports

bad:
you get bored with it really easy ( currently looking to trade for 96-00 integra )
too much civic rolling around
thief is just a big problem for civic
get rev at every red light u stopped at

Method520 06-22-2009 11:57 PM

being as old as they are.. they pretty much look like current model cars. great look to em, not to pizzazy. the 4drs gots plenty of space for everything if you know what i mean.

the bad, this could probably be the same case with many other cars, but after disassembling and putting back together the interior pieces many times, they get flimsy and dont really fit as tight as they use to : /
-every big truck with a lift kit that pulls next to u at a stop light has to be a bitch and mob full throttle when the light turns green.. but thats about it

overall great car, and excellent chassy design

that one guy 06-23-2009 12:33 AM

thx again!!

I've had my share of ek's, and personally I think they just feel cheap / plastic-y for some reason. I hate how they all have a gray dash as well, but on the + side they look so sexy slammed and you have a good amount of interior room. once I fit 7 people in my 4dr ek with the rear seats folded.

2000_Silver_EX 06-23-2009 08:23 AM

00 EK coupe. I love it. It is still failry stock. I am buying parts now to start the project. It is a daily driver and I am the orig owner! It has been babied since I bought it.

Headlights, easy to polish them and fix that.
Feelinging "plastic-y" , well they are not ferraris they are an inexpensive car, that is why we own them.

OhDang 06-23-2009 09:34 AM

Hate the position for the cigarette lighter
Awkwardly high shifter(maybe its just me)

PhoenixB16 06-23-2009 09:40 AM

EBP=worst fucking color EVER............ And the fact that owning one will keep you up at night, wondering WHEN its going to get jacked....

eghatchsir 06-23-2009 12:35 PM

The Good:
Look Great for their year, up-to-date style
Spacious Engine bay
Farely spacious Interior
Easy to take a part/put together
Very Easy to work with
I see way more EG Hatches than I do EK's. So rarer to see I guess?
D16Y's have Steel Shift forks opposed to older <96 Aluminum shift forks
If you leave that Stock D16Y7 in, enjoy +30MPG

Bad:
Driverside Motor Mount is shit
Too many plastic parts
D16Y7/D16Y8's have shitty oil pumps if you want to build them
Always have to worry about theives even if you have security
Stock Seats are terriblely uncomfortable if you drive more than 15 minutes.
OBD2 is a pain in the ASS, I converted.

Overall though, I think I would give EK Hatches a  just for the basics.

Get over yourself. I didnt know you were the grammar police?

JDM_sohc 06-26-2009 09:45 PM

hmm.......
the good: sexy lil cars
wide range of aftermarket parts
easy to build
light weight
room for the sexxy time!!!!

the bad
no rear disc brakes on most of the ek chassis except the SI

Slow_HX 06-26-2009 10:48 PM

One thing I don't miss about my coupe were the reoccuring window problems. Had to replace two regulators within a year and a half.
