1989 engine rebuild question
i have a 89 crx si stock.... and would like to rebuild the engine seals and rings and such... about how much is this gunna run... ball park... and how much would a shop charge do do this... its leaking oil now and its time at 150 to do a full rebuild... wanna keep her running for many more years any info would be nice thanks
for a decent rebuild including extract/install expect to spend at least 500
$500 would be insanely cheap. figure mitchell's book time is 25.4 to remove, overhaul and reinstall so figure anywhere between $65-$90/hour (machine shop rates may be cheaper but this is ball park for most shops i've worked at) x 25.4 plus a few hundred in parts depending on what all needs to be replaced and your looking at somewhere between $2000-$2500
hmmm ok this is giving me the idea that it would presumably be cheaper to do a swap... i mean i would do the rebuild most of the stuff on engine is new... water pump alt stater dizzy im saying like a full seal rebuild... main seals piston rings... ect
timing belt new hoses... basically all seal rebuild... to bring the engine back to life so to speak
Rebuilding the motor is gonna cost more then swapping it unless your doing the work yourself.
Honestly your better of finding a cheap d series and swapping it if your trying to save some cash |
im really trying to keep it as original as possible meaning original engine and all... i can do most of the work would need help with internals would be the second time tearing a engine all the way down... i've heard with machine time people doing a full rebuild in a couple days kinda what im looking to do... i want to keep the original engine idk im wierd like that... and i would like to keep it as original as possible...

2000 is a respectable price on something like that, what would be cheaper would be to bring me to the motor out of the car with trans and clutch off. And you supply parts, then it will save you some money if you do alittle work too...
If you take the motor out your self, you'll save.
Try PBS brakes and machine on cave creek. Name is Bob, he did my head work, and my car runs great. very reasonable |
Leaking oil and burning oil are two different things. What makes you think you need to tear open the bottom end and replace everything? If it's just leaking a bit from the front main/rear main/trans/etc....just replace any/all rubber seals and do a timing belt/water pump/tensioner. Unless it smokes on start-up/decel or under load AND overheats/coolant disappears/etc, I wouldn't even take the head off.

Any stock motor in a crx in this day in age should be r&r'd lol
