noise when turning

Hey guys, my 91 accord makes a grinding noise when I turn the steering wheel side to side. It almost feels as if the rack and pinion isn't going back and forth smoothly as it should, I was also wondering if it could be a worn/dry ball joint? any help would be appreciated

Does your power steering leak? Could be a bad rack.
Or if that's not the problem, then possibly bad tie rods but that's doubtful if there's no play in your steering.
Sounds like its time for a new rack.

Is there a whiny noise coming from the pump? Also move it side to side a couple times then check your fluid for froth. A real common issue is the lowside return hose elbow seal on the pump becomes brittle and hard. It allows air to suck into the pump and cause cavitation. I would certainly check that first.
