b16a2 problems

Whats up everyone having some issues with my car its a em1 clone. It turns off on me and smokes a lot while it is on? white smoke plus even more significant there is fuel coming out of the exhaust. checked the injectors already had them tested & cleaned, checked spark plugs it seems like fuel injector & spark plug 2 are kind off failing but they are firing compression is a little low at 90 for that same number 2 cylinder. any ideas now me & my dad are thinking the ecu maybe? its just so rare for the ecu to go out

Slo_sohc 10-17-2011 11:32 AM

It doesnt sound like its the ecu, my guess would be to change the entire ignition. As in cap, rotor, plugs and wires. As for the smoke, it kind of sounds like your rings are just about done.

Habmx 10-17-2011 11:38 AM

Wait, so you compression tested it, and #2 showed 90 psi? have you leak down tested it? I'd imagine that white smoke plus a compression reading like that would signify a head gasket. Have you checked for compression bubbles in the coolant?

C.R.A.Y. 10-17-2011 11:49 AM

two cylinders are at 90psi compression? its not your ecu, its not anything but most likely an head gasket. if the 2 cylinders are that low are next to each other then id put money on a head gasket

Broskiballa 10-17-2011 12:13 PM

Definitely seems like a head gasket.. 90 psi compression? 165-185 seem about average for a b16. I could be wrong. As long as all of your cylinders are reading about the same.

What are the compression readings for the remaining cylinders?

Mando8000 10-17-2011 12:26 PM

sorry for not being clear I only checked cylinder 2 for compression first thing that came to mind was a bad head gasket but would that cause fuel to come out of the exhaust?

Broskiballa 10-17-2011 12:33 PM

You need compression for combustion. If its not able to ignite the fuel, then yes.

Habmx 10-17-2011 12:33 PM

it's probably coolant. Just smells like exhaust, because it's coming from, well, your exhaust tubing. It wont run because its probably hydro locking. I would look into it more before you keep trying to turn it over or drive it.

Mando8000 10-18-2011 03:55 PM

actually it will turn turn on pretty easy, its staying on thats the problem. Also if you place your hand on the exhaust you will get sprinkles of fuel so it doesnt just smell like fuel. i mean it must have something to do with the injectors if the fuel isnt spraying correctly right?

taintschwacker 10-18-2011 04:10 PM

White smoke is coolant, when its running go back and smell it and see if it is sweet smelling. the fuel coming from the pipe is coolant mixed with your fuel and coolant isnt combustable so it comes out with some fuel mixed. it wants to die cause after the water pump starts running you are building pressure in your cooling system and it sprays more coolant into the cylinders and washes them out. you keep running it like that you with soak the cylinders, ruin your rings and score your cylinder walls and wash out the cylinders. more issues than you need. buy a head gasket and redo it.

I wouldn't be happy with less than 200psi for a b16

squishmitten 10-19-2011 07:44 PM

^^^ agreed

Mando8000 10-20-2011 08:12 PM

Thanks for the help guys but the problem keeps getting weirder. Went for a test drive this morning and the car was still acting up. Rechecked the compression, this time on all 4 cylinders & they all read 180? Changed the oil to see if there was fuel mixed in with it, looked mostly ok maybe a little thin but nothing 2 bad. Turned the car on to see if anything had changed & now the car is running fine wtf? not even any smoke. Gonna go ahead & drive it to school 2morrosee what happens so if you see a red em1 at mcc smokin its me

Nachooooosupreme 10-20-2011 09:04 PM

Magical oil change?
By the sounds of it you probably don't change your oil very often. As a matter of fact I bet there was about 2 quarts of thick black oil that poured out of your oilpan. Id also bet you have a high mileage engine too. Your smoking cuz the cylinder walls are not getting lubrication (oil) and your running your piston rings against the cylinder walls without lubrication thus the smoke in your exhaust.

If I'm wrong please tell me different kthxbai :)

Mando8000 10-20-2011 09:57 PM

bout 85,000 miles on it i do oil change every 2-3 months I try to take care of it

Habmx 10-21-2011 07:52 AM

Were you driving in the rain before this all started? lol

Mando8000 10-21-2011 10:06 AM

lol no rain around here man. So im at mcc right now and it started smoking a lil bit again:dumbass: Probably gonna end up tearing the bytch apart see wtf is goin on in there. thx again guys.

Habmx 10-21-2011 10:12 AM

Leak down test it. Compression tests can be misleading. My buddies car had a blown head gasket but compression tested 190 across the board. Check for compression in the coolant.

Broskiballa 10-21-2011 10:41 AM

Still white smoke? How badly is it smoking? You have something getting past rings, valves, or your gasket is toast.

I suggest pulling your head off, and investigating sir.

Broskiballa 10-21-2011 10:43 AM

Oh also, are you loosing coolant?!

FranktheTank 10-21-2011 11:23 AM

Wow glad to see this thing is still alive!
But like everyone said compression test and leak down.
and do the compression test while the engine is cold. Most likely the rings are starting to get shot, that engine used to smoke a bit sometimes in higher rpms around the vtec area

Mando8000 10-21-2011 12:00 PM

What up frank well its half dead lol hows your bro?

FranktheTank 10-23-2011 01:29 PM

ahaha just gotta give it some loveeee! but he's good
