it would appear as if he used TOO MUCH of the Shadow/Highlight feature in photoshop. I would advise against over using this feature (some is ok though). you'll get halos around objects of contrast and it just looks like poo if you ask me.

e2blade, how much work are u putting into ps with all the photos? they all look like u nailed the exposure

all i add is contrast , viberance, and sometimes unsharpen mask or smart sharpen, i can get a picture done in less than 2 minutes usually. i spend a little more time on ones that look epic. u can check my metadata if your desperate.
