Painting the engine block?

Anyone have tips on painting the block and head?

Tips such as:

- Brand of paint used
- Color of paint that matches the aluminum color the closest
- What you should mask off on the engine
- Which areas are safe to paint, which are not
- How many coats and such
- Any other tips and troubles you have experienced while doing this

The purpose of this is to make the engine look cleaner/newer.

go to autozone, and get the 500 degree engine paint. Just the the aluminum one. NOT SILVER. Just mask off what you don't want painted. You arent gona hurt anything. I stuffed paper towels in intake and exhaust ports to keep them clean. Other than that have at it. make sure it's good and clean before hand. Paint doesn't stick to grease/oil

I never painted a block/head but
I would think it be the same for anything else

buy some aircraft paint stripper in a aircan
spray it on the block.

power wash everything clean

then get some silver or w/e color high temp paint and paint it with a few coats until your happy with it.

and just mask off whatever you dont want painted etc...

If not silver, then which color would you recommend?

That's what I was thinking.

I found a semi-helpful link:
http://www.niksula.hut.fi/~mdobruck/...11/caustic.htm

The author says to etch prime it first, any opinions on that?

we did black with purple pearl on a friends ls block. Just used car paint. Scuffed it all and painted it basecoat / clear with air powered spray gun. Same with the head. It help up wit hthe engine heat too. stuck real good and thick on their

the engine was also out of the car, which is prefferable.

You could use silver if you wanted, but they have an actual Aluminum color. It will look a whole lot more stock.

I say instead of painting it you polish it, thats what I did with my block, first get SOS pads that you can buy at walmart and start cleaning it and also get engine degreaser and clean everything off the block, then sand it really good and then it will keep shinning and shinning more and more and just keep going until it looks nice, I will post pictures later of how my block looks, I just polished enough to shine but not glow or blind people when they look at it.

yah use aluminum. silver looks too much like chrome, way to much shine, looks cheesy imo
