Where to buy syncros?

Hey, I have a 99 si 5spd trans that is grinding at 5k+ rpm in third & fourth, so I figure it needs syncros at least, works fine if you don't beat on it. But I was having trouble finding syncros for it. And wondered what you guys recommended brand wise. Thanks

You were having trouble finding them? Did you try Honda?
They sell the 3rd and 4th gear syncros as a set, they also come with a new 3rd gear for the mainshaft. IIRC, Gearspeed in California sells the syncros individually but they're like $100/each. Might as well just buy the kit from Honda and save yourself some additional time/labor down the road.

The only other alternative that I've heard of are carbon syncros, which are unnecessary for a street car and fairly pricey.

Thanks, yeah I found the complete sets, like $250 from Honda. It just seemed pretty expensive for syncros compared to other manual syncros I've priced before. I found some stuff on eBay, they were selling syncros for a bunch of different stuff, and some carbon stuff but it was some company I hadn't heard of. Not that I'm real familiar with good aftermarket manual trans parts manufacturers.

synchrotech has brass and carbon synchros. Since your in there might aswell replace the springs. Probably also worn due to your grinding.

Keep in mind that once syncros are worn, the next part to start wearing are the engagement teeth on the gear itself and the engagement teeth on the slider sleeve. That is why Honda sells the syncros as a set (brass rings, steel springs, hub, slider sleeve, and gear with engagement teeth).

IMHO, it's not worth the money saved to buy some no name syncro off of ebay considering the amount of time it takes to pull the transmission, open it up and replace worn parts, prep the case for reassembly (cleaning off old Honda bond suuuucks), and then throw the transmission back in the car....only to hope that the syncro ring was the only thing causing the shifting issue.

If you are 100% sure that it is just the brass syncro ring that's shot and everything else looks to be in good shape, here is are some affordable alternatives to buying the whole set from Honda.

Syncrotech has a good reputation

Gearspeed does too. If you order from Gearspeed, ask for Marcel, and tell him that Gabe from Honda Challenge sent you.
