First off, I can’t take credit for this write-up, as it was borrowed from D-Series.org member sir_bobos. This is the way I did it and it works like a charm.
I used:
2’ section of 1” PVC pipe
1/4" x 1 1/2” Bolt (Your camera may use a different thread/pitch, so make sure you get what works)
Cordless drill
1/4” drill bit
Step Bit (UniBit)
Here is the pipe and the bolt.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/DSC00677.jpg
The receipt from Home Depot.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/DSC00678.jpg
Measure the legs on your headrest and mark the PVC pipe where you will drill.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/DSC00679.jpg
Drill all the way through the PVC pipe and then use your step bit to get the holes large enough to accept the headrest legs. You want the headrest to fit snug in the holes so it doesn’t wiggle around.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/DSC00680.jpg
It’ll look like this when you’re done.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/DSC00681.jpg
Test fit it in the car and mark the location where you want to mount your camera. Then drill a 1/4” hole for your bolt. Fit the bolt into the hole. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/DSC00682.jpg
It should look like this when you’re done.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/slammedb5/GetAttachmentaspx-4.jpg
You can easily drill new holes for different camera angles or placement and use the same bolt. You may need to use zip-ties to further secure the pipe to the headrest body, if it moves around too much.
sir_bobos painted his mount, which you can do if you wish. If you do this DIY, feel free to post up your results and any changes you made.

Like i said, you can drill new holes to get the camera in the up/down position you want, and obviously you can swivel it left/right to suit your needs.
For less than $2, you can afford to play around with it to get what you want, IMO

What i did. is I drilled 4 holes in the pipe so I could adjust the angle of the camera. I also used the camera strap and a second screw with a lock washer on it so that the camera could not swing around on its bolt.
really inovative and the one that looks like a basket is really bad ass

Damn, I am going to do this now. My Sony Cybershot may blur when the car shakes though, the video on it sucks when it gets moved around. Idk for $2 it is worth it just to find out.

I like the PVC idea. I used 1" box aluminum. Little more complicated, but I like it and it's worked really well on course. Nice and secure with very little vibration from the seat.

I made this mount after sitting on the materials for a couple months. The picture blurs here and there. I will adjust some setting on my camera to see how it goes.
Test No.1 of this mount. Enjoy the video!

I took my civic out to South Mountain and made some adjustments to the camera and the mount. The only thing i changed on the mount was just raising the head rest one knotch from the furtherest down u can go, to one click up. You can see less of my dash and more of the road. steady picture, no blur..just awesome. materials costing less then 2 bucks, this is great. i had to buy that bit so it was more but the drill bit has proven to be very handy. ENJOY!

Day time video as promised. I thought shooting in the day would show more vibration but i was wrong. I think this video will make people want to attempt making this mount. The original video was 40 minutes long so i edited it a lil.I got carried away but its the first video Ive ever done like this. if it gets too boring, just forward to like the last 30 secs. It would be useful against officers that want to go on a "power trip". Could be used as evidence in a court hearing.
I like the mount. Def would use metal>Plastic. But its decent for the price.

i know the videos i put up arent the greatest. but the point was to show that the mount was stable. i took video back when i had a 97 EK coupe on Skunk2 coilovers. It was a stiff ride but not horrible. i think the videos proved that whether driving on normal roads or curvy roads, its a stable mount.

^^ this
the camera secures to the pipe using a screw. There is a spot on all cameras where u can mount it to a bi pod / mount. cell phones dont have this.
ya i know this but i went and got the materials so i'll post pic's tomarrow when i got it in. it's gonna be a kind of a soft clamp to hold on to the phone...
Daddy_Digital
04-18-2012, 11:41 PM
if you wanted to use a cell phone, get one of those mounts with the suction cup that holds cell phones and that might work.
something like this..

ill try to grab a bunch of gopros that my buddy hasnt ever used for the DA run. maybe someone that knows how to make a vid can get all the footage and do something neat with it.
got all the materials and installed the mount with a mod to hold my phone... it looks kinda ghetto but is very effective and sterdy. sorry for the blurry pic's. phone dosen't do good at night... would have taken a pic with the phone being held but obviously... ya....
